FARMVILLE, Va. – Following a three-week break from competition, the Longwood men's tennis team resumes its season Saturday with a doubleheader in Fredericksburg, Va. The Lancers will face Christopher Newport at 1:30 p.m., before the squad's second match of the day against Mary Washington at 5 p.m.
"Both CNU and Mary Washington are talented and deep teams and will give us good competition early in the spring season," said Longwood head coach
Marty Perry.
Last time out, Longwood dropped its spring opener at sixth-ranked North Carolina, 7-0, Friday, Jan. 16 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The match against the Tar Heels was played under the ITA experimental rules, including no ad scoring in singles and doubles. In addition, the three doubles matches were one set with a tie-break at six-all instead of the former eight game pro-set.
Christopher Newport opens its spring slate against Longwood, as the Captains posted a 14-8 overall record a season ago. CNU had three players earn three victories in singles play throughout the fall, including Max Katcher, Jake Smith and Dillon Sykes. In doubles, the Captains top pair of Justin Cerney and David Reed posted four victories.
Mary Washington also opens its spring slate against the Lancers Saturday, as the squad is listed 15th in the ITA Division III rankings. The Eagles have one of the most dynamic singles players in Division III in Tyler Carey at No. 15 overall, as well as the No. 24 doubles pair of Andrew Curtis and David Lunding-Johansson.
