FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood and Liberty are set to rekindle the rivalry Tuesday afternoon in Lynchburg. The Lancers and Flames will meet for the fifth time with the series currently level at 2-2.
What They're Saying"Liberty is a good team, with whom we have enjoyed a great rivalry in recent years," said head coach
Iain Byers. "We are anticipating a high tempo encounter, which will be decided in the midfield. They are efficient in their ball movement, and have a high level of skill. It's going to be up to us to nullify their key players and impose our style of play on them."
The PastLongwood and Liberty have played each year since the inception of the Flames' program in 2011. Last year, the teams met twice with Liberty taking both matchups.
In the Lynchburg meeting, Longwood stumbled out of the gates, falling behind 4-0 in the first 36 minutes. The Barr sisters, Natalie, Serena and Bethany, created havoc accounting for five Liberty goals and three assists as the trio tallied 13 points in the game.
Longwood returns to the Hill City for just the second time. This go-around, the Lancers are looking for a little better result.
Liberty on FireThe Flames are riding a five game winning streak into Tuesday's matchup, including a pair of top-15 wins. Liberty knocked off both No. 12 Wake Forest and No. 11 Louisville in the past 15 days with 2-1 victories. The Flames are outscoring opponents 19-5 during the winning streak which is currently the fifth longest active streak.
Liberty is led statistically by Sarah Gipe with six goals and a pair of assists for 14 points. Right behind Gipe is fellow junior Ashlee Krulock with four goals and four assists. Don't sleep on the trio of Barr sisters though, Serena and Bethany have accounted for two goals and one assist apiece while the elder Barr, Natalie is working back from injury.
Next UpLongwood finishes the week with a Sunday matinee at Central Michigan. It will be just the second time the Lancers and Chippewas have met on the turf. The contest also marks a pivotal return to Mid-American Conference play, with the Lancers looking to begin a playoff push.
