Longwood Welcomes Pair of Weekend Foes

Lancers face Towson Friday, Vermont Saturday

FARMVILLE, Va. – After another tough overtime loss against Georgetown, Longwood looks to rebound versus Towson and Vermont on Friday and Saturday, respectively, at the Athletics Complex.

Saturday's game versus Vermont is designated as the Cancer Awareness Game and fans are encouraged to wear pink. Four autographed field hockey balls will be raffled off during the game with raffle tickets available for $1. Commemorative pink bracelets will be sold as well, with all proceeds going to the National Foundation for Cancer Research.

Time for Towson

Longwood and Towson will meet Friday at 3 p.m. to kick off the weekend festivities. The Lancers and Tigers have played nine times, dating back to 1988, with the series level at 4-4-1. The two schools last met in 2011 with Longwood emerging victorious at 2-0.
Towson, under second-year head coach Carly Campana, is 1-5 on the season with the lone victory coming over American on Sept. 13. The Tigers have scored eight goals, tied for the fewest in the Colonial Athletic Association. Towson has been outscored 23-8 through six games and outshot 123-51.
The Tigers lean on Stacey Mackintosh who has a team-high seven points with two goals and three assists. The only other Tiger with multiple goals is Courtney Branco, with a pair of goals for four points.

Regardless of the outcome of Friday's game with Towson, the Lancers will have to put it behind them quickly. Longwood will have a 24-hour turnaround before hosting Vermont Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Lancers have challenge the visiting Catamounts just once before with Vermont taking a 2-1 win home from Farmville.

The Catamounts are in a building phase under first-year head coach Kate Pfeifer. The Michigan alumna and former national champion is trying to lead Vermont out of a 26-game losing streak. The Catamounts are currently 0-7 this season after falling to Quinnipiac 3-2 last Sunday.

Vermont is not clawless, though, as the Catamounts have lost four of their last five games by just a single goal.  Saturday marks Vermont's first, true road game of the season as the Catamounts leave the state for just the second time this season.

Vermont is led by a pair of dangerous forwards in Taylor Gaines and Ashley McDonald. Both players have three goals, combining for 75-percent of the Catamounts attack.
