Lancers Looking for First Road Win

Longwood takes on Georgetown Saturday at 6 p.m.

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood field hockey begins a string of four straight non-conference games Saturday evening at 6 p.m. against Georgetown in Washington, D.C.

The Lancers and Hoyas meet for the second time in as many seasons after Longwood defeated Georgetown 3-0 in an exhibition match last year. That contest took place as part of Longwood's annual G.A.M.E. (Greatest Athletics March Ever) event in front of over 1,600 fans in Farmville. This time, the showdown counts toward the records, marking the first regular season meeting since 2009. Longwood also took that matchup by a score of 1-0.

Last Time Out

Longwood returns to the turf just two days after claiming its first-ever Mid-American Conference win. The Lancers used a strong second half to pull away from Missouri State. After struggling to find goals the previous weekend, the blue and white seemed to find the touch in the circle, finishing four of seven shots.
Lauren Bernard continued her stellar play in goal as the sophomore made six saves. Bernard boasts a goals against average of 1.79 goals per game which leads the MAC. Collectively, the Lancers allow exactly two goals per contest which again tops the MAC.

On the Road Again

Longwood hits the road for the sixth time in its first eight games. The Lancers are 1-4 away from home this season and 0-4 in true road games. The Lancers will look to right the ship against Georgetown before closing with a balanced schedule. Following Saturday's game against the Hoyas, the Lancers play five home and away contests to round out the season.

Scouting Georgetown

The Hoyas enter Saturday night with a 2-3 record overall. Georgetown is returning to Washington, D.C. after a pair of road games in the New England. Georgetown split the trip, defeating Holy Cross 2-1 in overtime and falling 4-1 to Brown. The Hoyas dropped their only home game this season 2-1 to Lock Haven back on Sept. 7.

Georgetown is led by Aliyah Graves-Brown and Megan Parsons, who have scored three goals apiece. Other offensive threats include Emily Weinberg with a pair of goals and team leading eight shots.

In net, the Hoyas can go one of two ways; perhaps the most likely option is Rachel Skonecki who has started the past four games. The sophomore keeper is giving up 2.50 goals per game and stopping 72-percent of shots placed on goal. The second option for the Hoyas is Rosalie Nolen who started the season opener for Georgetown. Nolen allowed five goals against Appalachian State en route to a 5-4 defeat.

Statistically, Georgetown plays pretty strong in the first half. The Hoyas have outscored opponents 5-3 in the opening 35 minutes. In the second half, Georgetown has been outscored 10-5 by opponents, struggling to maintain its strong starts.

Up Next

Longwood returns home for a pair of non-conference home games on Friday, Sept. 26 and Saturday, Sept. 27. The Lancers will take on Towson and Vermont in an effort to preserve their perfect home record.
