Box Score LOWELL, Mass. – Edel Nyland finally found the back of the goal on her eighth shot of the game to force overtime, but it was not enough as the Lancers fell to UMass Lowell 4-3 in double-overtime Sunday at Wicked Blue Field in Lowell, Mass.
"Today's game was a very tight affair," head coach
Iain Byers said. "We felt as if we did enough to win the game. We had the chances and we were unlucky to not come away from the weekend 2-0."
Longwood (1-1) got off to a slow start, conceding an early goal just 5:45 into the game. UMass Lowell took the 1-0 advantage on a goal from Eleonore Agneessens assisted by Georgia Cowderoy. Cowderoy laid a pass from center circle across to Agneessens who rifled the ball past
Lauren Bernard. At the time, Lowell held a 6-0 advantage in shots, but Longwood came charging back.
The Lancers tilted the field for the remainder of the first half and leveled the scored eight and a half minutes later as
Hollie MacDonald pounced on a loose ball in the circle and fired it top-shelf for her first goal of the season. Longwood was not done as nine minutes later
Jennifer Burris found the cage for the second time in as many days to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead at the 23:09 mark. Longwood would finish the half strong with a pair of shots in the final 30 seconds but
Edel Nyland was stopped by Lowell keeper Kelsey Federico and the rebound attempt from
Abbey Ripley sailed wide.
The second half began with a strong flourish from the blue and white. Nyland once again was turned away by Federico but the Lancers earned a penalty corner just 90 seconds into the period.
Kate Harvey's shot off the corner went bounding wide as the Lancers couldn't capitalize on the early chances.
Then it was UMass Lowell's turn to come roaring back, Georgia Cowderoy slotted a Sophie Watt pass into the cage to level the score at two all. The River Hawks continued to press and found a go-ahead goal at the 61:15 mark as Cowderoy threw a pass across goal to Bianca Jones who tipped the ball in at the left post.
Longwood refused to throw in the towel as Nyland, who launched a team high 10 shots, continued to pound the UMass Lowell goal. Finally, on her eighth attempt, Nyland found a heroic equalizer with exactly five minutes remaining in the game.
Lil-Sophie Achterwinter slung a pass from the 25-yard line and found Nyland at the top of the circle, who blasted it past Federico.
In the first overtime, Longwood routinely controlled the flow of play. The Lancers had three shots in the first OT period but were unable to find the winner. In the second overtime period, Longwood's Achterwinter launched a shot from the edge of the circle which was saved by Federico. The rebound bounced at the right post, but Lowell was able to clear before a pair of Lancers to get a stick to it. Just moments later, Eleonore Agneessens found Bianca Jones with a long pass, Jones dribbled into the circle and sent a bouncing shot past Bernard for the game winner.
"We'll take the loss on the chin," said Byers. "Now we're going to go back to work and get ready for JMU on Friday."
Longwood returns to action Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. as the Lancers travel to Harrisonburg to take on James Madison.
