FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University Athletics announced its annual award winners at the 2013-14 Student-Athlete Awards Banquet Thursday night in Farmville.  Senior Tristan Carey/Colonial Beach and junior Megan Baltzell/Stafford were named the school's male and female Athletes of the Year, respectively.  Seniors Jeylani Dublin/Brooklyn, New York and Amy Putnam/Poquoson were presented the male and female Henry I. Willett Scholar-Athlete Awards, respectively.  Carlos Canas/Manassas and Elizabeth McCarthy/Dunnsville were named male and female Freshman Athletes of the Year, respectively.  Junior Kylie Dyer/Midlothian received the Jimmy Yarbrough Inspiration Award.
    
Tristan Carey, a 6-4 guard on the men's basketball team who won the honor for the second consecutive year, started 31 games and averaged a team-best 18.5 points and 6.6 rebounds, along with a school-record 94 three-point field goals.  He had team-bests of 28 double-figure scoring games, including three 30-point games among 14 20-point games, and led the team in scoring 20 times and in rebounding 16 times with five double-doubles.  Carey, who scored a season-high 37 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds this season, was named honorable mention All-Big South, and finished his career with 1,504 points (6th all-time) and 230 career three-pointers (2nd all-time).  Tristan majors in sociology, and is the son of Theresa Carey Fulcher and Joseph Fulcher, Jr.
    
Megan Baltzell, a catcher on the softball team, has started all 47 games and leads the Lancers with her .471 batting average, 64 hits, nine home runs, three triples, 16 doubles, 42 RBIs, 44 runs, 31 walks, 113 total bases, an .831 slugging percentage and a .579 on-base percentage.  She adds 14 stolen bases (second on team) and a .980 fielding percentage (second on team).  Baltzell was named to the 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Second Team, the NFCA All-Southeast Region First Team, the All-Big South First Team and the Big South Championship All-Tournament Team.  Megan majors in exercise science, and is the daughter of Tammy and Winston Baltzell.
    
Jeylani Dublin, a 6-6 forward on the men's basketball team, started six of 32 games and averaged 10.4 points and 4.2 rebounds, while shooting a team-best 55 percent (147-268) from the field.  He had 16 double-figure scoring games, led the team in scoring four times and in rebounding seven times with one double-double.  Dublin, who scored a season-high 18 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds this season, was named to the Big South All-Academic Team, and finished his career with 692 points and 363 rebounds.  He is a four-time recipient of the Longwood Scholar-Athlete Award (2011-14), earned the 2013 Longwood All-Academic Team Award, is a member of the Longwood Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and attended the 2012 Big South Conference SAAC Leadership Conference.  Jeylani majors in  biology with a minor in pre professional clinical studies, attaining a 3.32 GPA, and is the son of Corene and Gregory Dublin.
    
Amy Putnam, a outfielder/first baseman on the softball team, has started 19 of 27 games and has a .208 batting average with one double, eight RBIs, eight runs, four walks and two stolen bases.  She was named to the 2013 Big South All-Academic Team, and has started 20 of 99 career games with a .192 batting average, two doubles, nine RBIs, 23 runs, eight walks and six stolen bases.  Putnam is a four-time recipient of the Longwood Scholar-Athlete Award (2011-14) and is a member of the Cormier Honors College at Longwood.  Amy majors in exercise science, attaining a 3.86 GPA, and is the daughter of Darlene and Phil Putnam.
    
Carlos Canas, a goalkeeper on the men's soccer team, started 15 of 16 games and played 1456:11 in front of the net, allowing 23 goals (1.42) with 63 saves (3.89) for a .733 save percentage and two shutouts.  He had a season-best 10 saves, and was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team.  Carlos majors in criminal justice and is the son of Jacqueline and Carlos Canas.
    
Elizabeth McCarthy, a pitcher on the softball team, has made 26 appearances with 19 starts, 12 complete games and three shutouts with a team-best record of 16-5 in the circle and a team-best 1.75 earned run average through 135.2 innings with a team-best 115 strikeouts.  She tossed a five inning no-hitter against Campbell, and has a pair of complete-game, three-hit wins to her credit this season.  Elizabeth majors in exercise science and is the daughter of Lucie and Chip McCarthy.

Kylie Dyer, a member of the women's soccer team, received the Yarborough Award based on her leadership skills and spirit for Longwood.  Her nomination for the award stated … "Emotional leader of the women's soccer team, but also gives her time serving with Athletics Media Relations, as an academic tutor and a member of Intervarsity on campus.  She's persevered through a third knee injury, always remaining positive.  She LIVES the Longwood spirit and truly bleeds Longwood blue.  Kylie's empathy for others makes her truly unique.  It's all about the team, as her personal gain is at the very bottom of her priority list.  Kylie Dyer represents the heart and spirit of Longwood." … Dyer missed the 2013 season due to the injury.  She is a three-time recipient of the Longwood Scholar-Athlete Award (2012-14), was named to the 2013 Big South Presidential Honor Roll and has been on the Dean's List every semester.  Kylie majors in political science, including a concentration in global politics with minors in communications and history, attaining a 3.87 GPA, and is the daughter of Cassie and Todd Dyer.
    
Three student-athletes were honored with the Academic PRIDE Award to honor their perseverance in their academic pursuits despite facing significant challenges along the way.  Senior Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas of the women's basketball team is the recipient of the Female Academic PRIDE Award.  The exercise science major has demonstrated tremendous commitment and has exhibited the core values of a student-athlete by returning to Longwood to pursue her degree.  She is a role model for others through her perseverance, use of academic resources and her positive relationship with her professors.  Heather is the daughter of Deeya and Michael Tobeck.
    
Juniors Brandon Delk/Newport News, a member of the baseball team, and Jonathan Kukapa/Leesburg, a member of the men's soccer team, are the co-recipients of the Male Academic PRIDE Award.  Delk, an exercise science major, has been inspiring in his pursuit of success.  His passion is exemplified in his commitment to accomplish the little details that it takes to be successful, whether in seeking available resources or requesting study table hours even when it is not required.  In addition to playing on the baseball team and focusing on his academics, he has also made time to work at the school's recreation center to put his degree into practice.  Brandon is the son of Michele and Ronnie Delk.  Kukapa is a political science, pre-law major with a minor in psychology.  He has demonstrated dedication to his studies, and has worked extremely hard to overcome academic obstacles to be successful.  After recognizing his strengths, he chose to pursue a political science degree and has developed effective communication skills in an effort to be a positive role model for his peers.  Jonathan is the son of Bellarmin and Willie Kukapa.
    
Senior Megan McCracken/Powhatan of the women's golf team and junior Steed Johnson/Ahoskie, North Carolina of the men's tennis team are the recipients of the Lancer Outstanding Service Awards.  McCracken has undertaken several service activities, including the Big South Food Drive, Operation Christmas Child, the Longwood Athletics Reading Program and 100 Holes for the American Cancer Society. She has also volunteered with the Special Olympics and Relay for Life.  Megan is the daughter of Stacy and Jeff McCracken.  Johnson has also participated in Operation Christmas Child, in addition to being involved with the school's Play4Kay breast cancer awareness efforts.  He is also the Lancer Lunatics Recruitment Chair.  Both McCracken and Johnson, who are commended on their positive attitudes and passion to serve, are members of the Longwood Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).  Steed is the son of Becky and Jamie Johnson.
    
Kathy Riley was named the Longwood SAAC Coach of the Year.  Currently in her 17th year at the helm of the Lancers' program, her squad owns a 34-13 overall record in 2014, marking her 10th 30+ win season at Longwood.  She guided the Lancers to a program-best 41-20 record last year, leading the team to its first-ever Big South Conference Championship and its first appearance at the Division I NCAA Regionals.  Riley is the most successful (.650 win percentage) and the longest tenured coach in the history of the Longwood program.
    
Kayla Miller, the game operations and events manager in the Longwood Athletics Department, was honored with the Longwood SAAC 2014 A.C.E.S. Award.  A.C.E.S. stands for Acclaimed Commitment to the Excellence of Student-Athletes and was presented to Miller for her unwavering efforts to enhance student-athlete welfare.  Her dedication to her position, as well as her enthusiasm and pride for Longwood Athletics all contributed to her selection.
    
Sergeant John Johnson, a member of the Longwood Police Department, received the Special Recognition Award for his commitment to helping the Longwood Athletics Department.  Johnson was commended for his positive attitude and willingness to serve.  A staple at many Longwood Athletic events, Johnson is always eager to help make sure that all varsity athletics events are staffed with a police presence to ensure the safety of all student-athletes and fans.
    
The Cormier Awards for Academic Excellence went to the Men's Golf and Women's Tennis teams for the Spring 2013 semester, while Men's Golf and Women's Golf earned the award for the Fall 2013 semester.  The teams earned the awards for recording the highest combined GPA for their respective semesters.
