BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – No. 9 Longwood University fell, 4-1, against No. 8 UNC Asheville (8-14) in the first round of the 2014 Big South Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Wednesday morning at the Webb Tennis Complex in Boiling Springs, N.C. Sophomore
Justin Higgs/Nassau, Bahamas led the Lancers, notching the squad's lone point of the day in singles play. Longwood close the 2014 campaign with a 1-18 overall record, while the Bulldogs advance to play No. 1 Presbyterian College in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
"This match came down to just a few points going the wrong way," said head coach
Jakob Gustafsson. "We played extremely hard and I liked our chances on the remaining courts there. Only one team can finish their postseason with a win, and unfortunately, it wasn't us this year. I'm proud of these guys for overcoming the challenges they have faced this year, and I know we are all better because of it."
Higgs secured his point in the No. 5 position against John Schubel with a 6-4 win in the first set before the match was retired in the second set at 2-4. Senior
Edward Becker/Sydney, Australia played at the No. 2 spot, facing a 6-1, 6-3 setback against Alex Croker, while junior
Steed Johnson/Ashokie, N.C. played at No. 3, where he was bested 6-3, 6-3 by Thomas Orestis-Panoulas. At No. 6, sophomore
Bharani Sankar/Glen Allen was handed a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Josh Swindler. Junior
Daniel Elston/St. Austell, Cornwall, England (6-6) and freshman
Warren Bryan/Greensboro, N.C. (1-6, 6-4, 2-3) played at the No. 1 and No 4. spots, respectively, but both matches went unfinished.
In doubles play, Johnson and sophomore
James Fudge/Kaarst, Germany were defeated at No. 3, falling 8-1 to Daniel Kirpak and Josh Swindler before Warren and Sankar were outdone by Schubel and Orestis-Panoulas 8-2 at No. 2. Elston and Becker played to a 5-4 decision at No. 1, but went unfinished, as the outcome was already sealed.
