CONWAY, S.C. – The Longwood University men's tennis team faced a 7-0 setback at Big South Conference opponent Coastal Carolina University (12-9, 4-4 BSC) at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center in the squads' regular-season finale. The Lancers (1-17, 0-8 BSC) have secured the No. 9 seed for the 2014 Big South Conference Championship, and will square off against No. 8 UNC Asheville in a first round match on Tuesday, April 15 beginning at 8 a.m. on the campus of Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C.
In singles action, all six Lancers fell against their respective opponents. Junior
Daniel Elston/St. Austell, Cornwall, England battled at the No. 1 spot in a hard-fought, three-set match, which he eventually dropped 6-1, 4-6, 10-8. Senior
Edward Becker/Sydney, Australia fell at No. 2 against nationally ranked opponent Philippe Tsangardis 6-2, 6-1. Junior
Steed Johnson/Ashokie, N.C and freshman
Warren Bryan/Greensboro, N. C. played at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively, as Johnson dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision and Bryan was bested 7-5, 7-6. Sophomore classmates
Justin Higgs/Nassau, Bahamas (7-5, 6-1) and
Bharani Sankar/Glen Allen (6-1, 6-0) also faced setbacks at No. 5 and No. 6 to close out singles play.
In doubles, Elston and Becker were topped in the No. 1 position with an 8-6 setback. The duo of Bryan and Sankar dropped an 8-5 decision at No. 2, while sophomore
James Fudge/Kaarst Germany and Johnson also fell, 8-1, at No. 3.
