Longwood Falls against Richmond, 6-1

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University men's tennis team fell, 6-1, against in-state opponent the University of Richmond (5-8) on Saturday afternoon at the Lancer Courts in Farmville. The Lancers were led by freshman Warren Bryan/Greensboro N.C., who earned the only point for the team at the No. 3 spot in singles play. Longwood (1-9) will return to action on Monday, March 10 when they travel to the University of North Carolina for a match beginning at 6 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.

"In our first home match of the season, we showed a lot of improvement in our game," said third-year head coach Jakob Gustafsson. "We still have some steps to take, but after seeing us today, I feel confident we will get there and become a tougher opponent as the season continues. We need to get healthy and raise our levels, but I definitely believe we can do so."

Bryan topped Dylan Trent 7-6 (1), 2-1 before the match was retired to pick up the lone singles victory. Juniors Daniel Elston/St. Austell, Cornwall, England (6-3, 6-3) and Steed Johnson/Ashokie, N.C. (6-1, 6-0) fell in their singles matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. Sophomore Justin Higgs/Nassua, Bahamas played at No. 4, where he dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision. Sophomore classmates Bharani Sankar/Glen Allen (6-3, 6-2) and James Fudge/Kaarst, Germany (8-2) both faced setbacks in the remaining singles action at No. 5 and No. 6.

In doubles play the Lancers went 1-2, as the duo of Fudge and junior Steed Johnson/Ashokie, N.C. defeated Hahn and Teague, 8-3, at No. 2. Elston and Bryan were topped by Dunbar and Dunbar, 8-6, at No. 1, while Sankar and Higgs lost, 8-6, to Quenard and Trent at No. 3.
