BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Longwood University men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision against Big South Conference opponent Campbell University (7-4, 2-0 BSC) on Saturday afternoon at the Nisbet Tennis Center. The Lancers were led by freshman
Warren Bryan/Greensboro N.C., who earned the only point for the team at the No. 4 spot in singles play. Longwood (1-11, 0-2 BSC) will return to action on Friday, March 21 when it hosts league opponent Winthrop at 12:30 p.m.
"Today we found a few more pieces to the puzzle that are needed to win matches," said head coach
Jakob Gustafsson. "We competed really well with a consistent top program within the Big South and were literally a few inches and a few points away from pulling an upset. The final score is not a fair reflection on how close this dual-match was. We still need to improve and make sure that we fight and compete through any kind of bad day and turn those into good days. Today was a big step in the right direction, though, and we now look forward to a row of home matches."
Bryan topped Rik van Gerwen in a hard fought three-set match 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, notching the Lancers lone point. Junior
Daniel Elston/St. Austell, Cornwall, England (6-2, 6-1) and senior
Edward Becker/Sydeny (4-6, 6-3, 6-5 (7)) faced setbacks in their matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. Junior
Steed Johnson/Ashokie, N.C. played at the No. 3 position, where he dropped a 7-6 (4), 6-1 decision. Sophomore classmates
Justin Higgs/Nassau, Bahamas (6-4, 6-4), and
Bharani Sankar/Glen Allen (6-2, 7-6 (3)) both faced setbacks, finishing out singles action at No. 5 and No. 6.
