Longwood Closes Non-Conference At Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. --
Longwood University will play its final non-conference men's basketball game of the season at Louisiana Tech University of Conference USA on Saturday evening, January 4 at 5 p.m. EST in Ruston, Louisiana.  The Lancers (5-9) of first-year head coach Jayson Gee are led by senior captain Tristan Carey (18.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 41 3FGs), while the Bulldogs (11-3) of third-year head coach Michael White are led by junior Raheem Appleby (16.5 points).  The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM or via the Internet at wvhl.net.

The Game
Longwood (5-9) continues its first season of the Gee Era on Saturday at 5 p.m. EST, as the Lancers play their final non-conference game, and the third of a four-game road swing, at Louisiana Tech University (11-3) of Conference USA in Ruston, Louisiana.  Gee, a former associate head coach at Cleveland State for the past seven seasons, was appointed at Longwood on April 3, 2013.  A veteran with 24 years of collegiate coaching experience, he helped the Vikings to four postseason appearances, including one NCAA Tournament and three NIT bids.

The Series
Longwood and Louisiana Tech are meeting for only the second time in the sport, as the Bulldogs took an 83-73 neutral-site win past the Lancers on November 19, 2005 in Lincoln, Nebraska.  The Lancers are 1-17 overall against current members of C-USA, though only one of the previous 18 games was played when one of those opponents was a member of C-USA … last year's season-opening game at Marshall (L 81-47, 0-3).  The others include Alabama-Birmingham (0-1), East Carolina (0-4), Florida Atlantic (0-2), Florida International (1-1), LA Tech (0-1), UNC Charlotte (0-3) and Old Dominion (0-2).

The Bulldogs
Louisiana Tech is 11-3 overall, 0-0 in Conference USA after a 102-98 overtime road win at Oklahoma on December 30.  Michael White is in his third year as head coach of the Bulldogs.  LA Tech was led against the Sooners by sophomore Alex Hamilton (31 points), junior Raheem Appleby (22 points) and senior Cordarius Johnson (17 points), off the bench.  The other three starters were senior Chris Anderson (8 points), along with juniors Michale Kyser (7 points, 8 rebounds) and Kenneth Smith (7 points, 9 assists).  The Bulldogs shot 46% (32-70) from the field, including 30% (10-33) on three-pointers and 80% (28-35) at the line.

The Lancers
Longwood is 5-9 overall, 0-0 in the Big South Conference after a 78-43 road loss at Ohio University on Dec. 30.  The Lancers were led against the Bobcats by redshirt-junior Jeylani Dublin (14 points), off the bench.  The five starters were senior captain Tristan Carey (7 points), sophomore Karl Ziegler (6 points), sophomore captain Lucas Woodhouse (5 points, 5 assists), sophomore transfer Leron Fisher (5 points) and senior Jeff Havenstein (0 points, 6 rebounds).  Longwood shot 31% (16-51) from the field, including 17% (2-12) on three-pointers and 64% (9-14) at the line.

It's An Unkind Road
Longwood has traveled to 33 different states and Washington, D.C. while playing 175 games away from Farmville since first playing a Division I schedule in 2004-05, including 148 true road games and 27 neutral-site games. The Lancers are 16-132 in the true road games and 8-19 in the neutral-site games ... the overall record away from Farmville is 24- 151. Longwood has 17 games on the schedule away from Farmville this season, and will visit one new state (Louisiana, for this game at LA Tech) … the Lancers are 1-7 away from home so far in 2013-14, including 1-5 in true road games and 0-2 in neutral-site games.
