PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding/Tickhill, England recorded 10 saves, as the Longwood University field hockey team forced No. 14 ranked Temple University (6-2) to double-overtime before falling, 3-2, on the road on Sunday afternoon. Senior Stacey de Grandhomme/Cape Town, South Africa and sophomore Nicole Deckard/Selinsgrove, Pa. notched one goal apiece for the Lancers in the decision. The winning goal for the Owls came less than a minute into the second overtime period, as Alyssa Delp tallied her second score of the day. Longwood (3-5) will return to action on Thursday, September 26 when the squad hosts in-state opponent, the University of Richmond, at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 6 p.m.
"Although the result was not what we wanted, we are very proud of the way we played against a top-15 team at the level of Temple," said head coach Iain Byers. "To come away having taken them to overtime and really having had a chance to win the game was very good for the team, and showed a lot of progress. Obviously, we would have preferred the result to be different. We really wanted to come away with a win, and at times, I thought we did enough to do it. To go 2-1 up showed great work from the team after coming off a marquee win (at Radford), so it was a tough loss, but we know if we play like that against more teams, we are going to come away with wins. This was a good starting block to move on from and this shows a standard we can play at."
After almost 43 minutes of scoreless action, the decision maker came just 22 seconds into the second overtime. Owl Mandi Shearer wound up and launched a shot that was blocked by the Lancers' defense before Delp collected the rebound and slapped a shot that found the back of the cage to seal the 3-2 victory for Temple.
The Owls recorded the first five shots of the day, but Longwood played solid defense, led by Goulding and classmate Caitlin Smith/Hampton, who logged her first defensive save of the season. Sophomore Kim Ruiter/Huizen, the Netherlands notched the first attempt of the day for the Lancers, as she collected a loose ball and put a shot on goal off the pads of Lizzy Millen. With just over 17 minutes left in the half, the Owls pulled ahead, 1-0, when Shearer dished a pass from the right side of the cage to Delp for the shot and goal. The Lancers retaliated just over a minute later, however, as de Grandhomme redirected a drive from the top of the circle by freshman Vanessa Tapper/Virginia Beach past the opposing keeper and into the cage, knotting the score at 1-1. The visitors would strike again, this time on a direct corner, with just over 12 minutes to play in the half. Smith inputted the ball to freshman Ellen Ross/Virginia Beach, who made a clean stick stop before Deckard fired a hard shot on target to give the Lancers a 2-1 advantage that they would carry into halftime.
Longwood carried its momentum into the beginning of the second half, registering the first two shots of the period, but the squad's lead would be erased just under eight minutes into play. The Owls registered back-to-back shots, both of which were saved by Goulding before Nicole Kroener converted on a penalty stroke opportunity to make it a 2-2 game. Temple outshot Longwood, 11-1, during the rest of the period, but the Lancers continued to dominate on defense, keeping the stalemate intact to force a 15-minute, sudden-victory overtime period.
Temple threatened first in the initial overtime, forcing a penalty corner and putting a good shot on goal, but Goulding came up with the save. On their next possession, the Owls earned yet another corner, this time putting two shots on target, both of which were knocked away by Goulding yet again. Sophomore Jennifer Burris/Virginia Beach and de Grandhomme logged consecutive chances for the Lancers, but Temple came up with a block and a save to extinguish the opportunity. Longwood earned a corner of its own with just over five minutes to play in the first overtime, but de Grandhomme's shot was saved by Millen. After another de Grandhomme attempt, Temple countered with two of its own, but one hit the post and the second sailed high to send the game into a second overtime.
TU outshot Longwood, 31-11, while also forcing more corners, 12-3. Sunday's contest marked the fourth meeting ever between Longwood and Temple in the sport of field hockey. The Owls now hold a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series.
