Justin Higgs/Nassau, Bahamas led the Lancers with victories in singles play. Longwood will return to action on Tuesday, March 26 when it hosts the University of Richmond beginning at 2:30 p.m.
“Today we pushed the top team in the conference to their limit,” said head coach
Jakob Gustafsson. “We were very unlucky to not get the doubles point, but still played extremely well in singles and were close to making something great happen. We are definitely hitting our stride right now, and with some more tough matches ahead, I hope we can keep our intensity up. If we do that, our game and wins will come right along.”
Elston defeated Adrien Rossignon 6-4, 6-0 in the #2 singles position to score the first point of the day for the Lancers. Higgs picked up his victory in the #6 position with a 6-2, 6-4 win over James Jones. Senior
Giorgi Khmiadashvili/Tbilisi, Georgia (6-4, 1-6, 6-3) and junior
Edward Becker/Sydney, Australia (6-4, 7-5) were both defeated at #1 and #3, respectively. Sophomore
Harry Kelleher/Sydney, Australia fell 6-2, 6-2 at #4, while sophomore
Steed Johnson/Ahoskie, N.C. lost 6-0, 6-1 at #5.
In doubles play, Kelleher and freshman
Bharani Sankar/Glen Allen defeated Ondrej Kralik and Steven Billington, 8-4, in the #3 position. Becker and Elston came close to pulling out a victory in the top position and earning the doubles point for Longwood, but the duo was defeated, 9-8 (4). Johnson and Khmiadashvili fell at #2, 8-4.
