Longwood Runs Past Visiting WVU Tech 95-80

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Senior captain Tristan Carey/Colonial Beach scored a game-high 27 points to lead five players in double-figure scoring as Longwood University took a 95-80 men's basketball victory past visiting NAIA member WVU Tech on Wednesday night at Willett Hall in Farmville.  Sophomore Karl Ziegler/Annandale added a double-double for the host Lancers (3-6), matching his career-high with 23 points, along with a career-high 15 rebounds, while redshirt-junior captain Jeylani Dublin/Brooklyn, New York also had a double-double with a season-high 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, sophomore Lucas Woodhouse/Greenlawn, New York contributed a double-double, as well, with 11 points and a career-high 13 assists, while sophomore transfer Leron Fisher/Baltimore, Maryland finished with 10 points.  Armond Perez posted a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Golden Bears (8-5).  Longwood will remain at home to welcome Eastern Kentucky University of the Ohio Valley Conference on Saturday, December 7 at 4 p.m. at Willett Hall in Farmville.

"We protected our house … we got a win," said first-year Longwood head coach Jayson Gee.  "Karl had 15 rebounds and that is a complement to how he has been playing.  He's increased his leadership, become more verbal, and this team needs that.

"I tip my hat to Tristan.  We wanted to honor him with that (pregame) video and ball that commemorates the accomplishment of scoring over 1,000 points … not everybody does that, and you see with him getting 27 tonight, what he is capable of doing, scoring-wise, and we need him to continue to lead this team.

"At the end of the day, our depth was just too much for them and our ability to really score the ball."

Longwood jumped out to an early 18-6 advantage at 14:22, getting points from five different players, including five by Ziegler and four by Dublin, off the bench.  WVU Tech responded with a 13-2 run to close to within 20-19 at 10:59, getting six points from Floyd Campbell.  The Lancers answered with seven-straight points to lead 27-19 at 9:38, and a three-point field goal by Fisher made it 30-21 with 9:15 on the first-half clock.  The Golden Bears managed to pull within four points three times late in the half, but Longwood received five quick points from Carey, including a three-pointer, to lead 47-41 at the break.

Longwood started the second half strong and increased its margin to 65-47 at 14:27, again spreading the points among five players, including seven by Ziegler and five by Carey.  WVU Tech once-again made a run, this time at 17-7 behind seven points from Jauries Thomas, to close to within 72-64 at 10:43.  A quick 11-3 run by the Lancers made it 83-67 at 7:07, and the hosts led by 14 or more points the rest of the way, taking their largest lead at 89-70 with 5:30 remaining on a jumper by Dublin.

Carey led Longwood with his game-high 27 points, including 4-10 three-pointers and 7-8 free throws, and now ranks 17th in career scoring with 1,085 points and fifth in career three-pointers (161).  Ziegler posted his second career double-double for the Lancers, tying his career-high with 23 points (7-10 FTs) and a career-high and game-high 15 rebounds.  Dublin added his fourth career double-double with a season-high 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.  Woodhouse finished with his fourth career double-double, as well, with 11 points and a career-high and game-high 13 assists, adding six rebounds.  Fisher contributed 10 points and a career-high six assists.  Longwood shot 50% (34-68) from the field, including 35% (6-17) on three-pointers and 81% (21-26) at the free throw line.

Perez led WVU Tech with his own double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds.  Thomas had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Bears, while Jaren Marino finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.  WVUT shot 43% (32-74) from the field, including 27% (6-22) on three-pointers and 37% (10-27) at the line.

Longwood and WVU Tech were meeting for the seventh time in the sport, and the Golden Bears continue to lead the series, 4-3.  It was the Lancers 26th consecutive home win against a non-Division I opponent since first playing a D1 schedule in 2004-05 (26-0).
