Longwood Falls On The Road At Ohio U. 78-43

Box Score

ATHENS, Ohio -- Nick Kellogg scored a game-high 17 points to lead Ohio University of the Mid-American Conference to a 78-43 men's basketball victory past visiting Longwood University on Monday night in Athens, Ohio.  The host Bobcats (9-3) led just 32-28 at halftime before outscoring the Lancers (5-9), 46-15, in the second half.  Redshirt-junior captain Jeylani Dublin/Brooklyn, New York led Longwood with a team-high 14 points, off the bench.  Longwood will play its final non-conference game of the season at Louisiana Tech University of Conference USA on Saturday night, January 4 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time in Ruston, Louisiana.

Longwood scored the first basket of the game at Ohio, as senior captain Tristan Carey/Colonial Beach made a jumper at 19:25 for the opening 2-0 advantage, and a three-point field goal by Carey made it 5-4 at 17:11.  A quick 6-0 run by the Bobcats had the score at 10-5 with 15:11 on the first-half clock, as Kellogg scored on a layup, followed by a three-pointer by Stevie Taylor and a free throw from Ricardo Johnson.  The Lancers were back within 17-16 at 8:24 after a three-pointer by sophomore captain Lucas Woodhouse/Greenlawn, New York, but an 11-2 run by OU put the hosts ahead by 10 points at 28-18 with 6:10 left until halftime.  Kellogg scored five of the points, including a three-pointer, while Johnson had three points and T.J. Hall added a three-pointer.  Longwood, however, battled back and outscored the Bobcats 10-4 over the final 5:48 of the half to close to within 32-28 at the intermission.  Dublin scored four of the late points, as the Lancers played the final seven-plus minutes of the period without their leading scorer, Carey, who collected three first-half fouls.

Ohio took control of the contest with an 18-4 run to begin the second half, leading 50-34 with 15:09 remaining.  Taylor made two quick three-pointers and Kellogg added another, while Maurice Ndour scored six points in the paint and Johnson had an old-fashioned three-point play.  Dublin made a jumper at 13:59 to pull Longwood within 50-36, but that was as close as the visitors would get.  The Bobcats extended their lead to 20 points at 56-36 on yet another three-pointer, this one from Travis Wilkins at 12:08, and led 72-42 with 3:44 left after a layup by Hall.  OU's largest lead was the final margin of 35 points, accomplished on its 10th three-pointer of the night, made by Hall with 2:16 on the clock.

Dublin led Longwood with his team-high 14 points, off the bench, making 7-11 field goals.  Carey finished with a season-low seven points for the Lancers, playing a season-low 20 minutes, as the early foul trouble proved difficult.  It was the first game this season that he did not reach double-figure scoring, and the first time in 16 games overall, dating back to last season.   Sophomore Karl Ziegler/Annandale added six points, while Woodhouse contributed five points, five assists and three steals.  Senior Jeff Havenstein/Mt. Airy, Maryland had team-highs of six rebounds and two blocks.  Longwood shot 31% (16-51) from the field, including 17% (2-12) on three-pointers and 64% (9-14) at the free throw line.

Kellogg led Ohio with his team-high 17 points, making 3-5 three-pointers, adding six rebounds and four assists.  He is the son of CBS Sports college basketball analyst and former Ohio State standout, and Big Ten MVP, Clark Kellogg.  Hall had 14 points, off the bench, for the Bobcats, while Johnson and Taylor each contributed 11 points, and Ndour finished with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.  OU shot 41% (25-61) from the field, including 36% (10-28) on three-pointers and 67% (18-27) at the line.  The Bobcats out-rebounded Longwood, 52-26, for a 19-2 advantage in second-chance points.

Longwood and Ohio were meeting for the first time in the sport, and the Bobcats now lead the series, 1-0.  The contest also marked the return of first-year head coach Jayson Gee to his native state of Ohio and to the OU campus, where he served on the coaching staff for three seasons (1993-96), including the first two years as an assistant, before serving as the associate head coach during 1995-96.  The Bobcats advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1993-94 (25-8), and to the NIT in 1994-95 (24-10), before finishing 16-14 in 1995-96.  Gee, from Springfield, Ohio, earned his Master's of Science degree in Sport Science and Administration from Ohio in 2003.
