ATHENS, Ohio -- Longwood University first-year head coach
Jayson Gee returns to his home state of Ohio on Monday night, December 30, as his Lancers (5-8) play on the road at Ohio University (8-3) of the Mid-American Conference at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio. The Game
Longwood (5-8) continues its first season of the Gee Era on Monday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m., as the Lancers play their first game in nine days, and the second of a four-game road swing, at Ohio University (8-3) of the Mid-American Conference in Athens, Ohio. Gee, a former associate head coach at Cleveland State University for the past seven seasons, was appointed at Longwood on April 3, 2013. A veteran with 24 years of collegiate coaching experience, he helped the Vikings to four postseason appearances, including one NCAA Tournament and three NIT bids. Gee coached three years at Ohio (1993-96), including the first two years as an assistant, before serving as the associate head coach during 1995-96. The Bobcats advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1993-94 (25-8), and to the NIT in 1994-95 (24-10), before finishing 16-14 in 1995-96. Gee, from Springfield, Ohio, earned his Master's of Science degree in Sport Science and Administration from Ohio in 2003.
The Series
Longwood and Ohio are meeting for the first time in the sport. The Lancers are 1-1 all-time against current members of the MAC, including an 80-62 road loss at Kent State on November 20, 2007 and a 66-65 home win past Buffalo on Nov. 19, 1988 (before the Bulls joined the MAC). Ironically, current OU head coach Jim Christian was the head coach at Kent State during 2007-08.
The Opponent
Ohio is 8-3 overall, 0-0 in the Mid-American Conference after a 70-69 overtime road win at Richmond on December 22. Jim Christian is in his second year as head coach of the Bobcats. Ohio was led at UR by junior Maurice Ndour (19 points, 7 rebounds), along with seniors Ricardo Johnson (14 points, 6 rebounds) and Nick Kellogg (14 points, 2 3FGs). The other two starters were redshirt-senior Jon Smith (6 points, 9 rebounds) and junior Stevie Taylor (3 points). The Bobcats shot 46% (26-56) from the field, including 50% (6-12) on three-pointers and 71% (12-17) at the line.
The Lancers
Longwood is 5-8 overall, 0-0 in the Big South Conference after an 84-64 road loss at Dartmouth on Dec. 21. Senior
Tristan Carey led the Lancers with a game-high 20 points (5 3FGs), while sophomore
Lucas Woodhouse added 16 points and a game-high six assists. The other three starters were sophomores
Karl Ziegler (6 points) and
Leron Fisher (4 points), and senior
Jeff Havenstein (4 points). Longwood shot 43% (22-51) from the field, including 46% (5-11) on three-pointers and 79% (15-19) at the line.
