LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Longwood University field hockey team has earned the No. 2 seed in the East Division for the 2013 Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference Tournament, which will take place on November 7-9, hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg. The Lancers are slated to square off against the No. 3 seed in the West Division, the University of the Pacific, in a quarterfinal match on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
"We have played Pacific before in the first round of the NorPac Tournament and it is always a good game," said head coach
Iain Byers. "At the moment, we are playing some good hockey and have a bit of momentum coming into these games. The team is focused and has goals for the tournament, which we aim to meet. This has been one of the toughest schedules to date for us and we knew that going into the season, but we now know that the tougher games earlier in the year have prepared us for this week's tournament."
The Lancers head into the tournament coming off a pair of conference wins to close out the regular season with an 8-11 overall record, including a 6-2 mark in league play. Pacific finished 4-13 overall in its regular season campaign with a 2-4 record in NorPac games.
Thursday's contest will mark the 10th meeting ever between the Lancers and the Tigers in the sport of field hockey. Pacific holds a slight, 5-4 edge in the all-time series, but Longwood earned a 3-1 victory when they last met at the NorPac Tournament in 2011.
Liberty and Stanford earned the No. 1 seeds for the East and West Divisions, respectively. The Flames will take on No. 4W California at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 in a first round game, while Stanford will matchup against No. 4E Davidson at 4 p.m. No. 2W UC Davis and No. 3E Radford are slated to kickoff the 2013 tournament with an 11 a.m. tilt.
