CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University field hockey team fell, 4-0, against No. 6 Boston College (11-3) of the Atlantic Coast Conference in a neutral site contest hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Kim Ruiter/Huizen, the Netherlands paced the Lancers with two shots in the outing. Senior Stacey de Grandhomme/Cape Town, South Africa recorded a pair of defensive saves on the day, as well. Kelcie Hromisin led Boston College, scoring two of the Eagles' goals in the decision. Longwood (5-9) will travel to Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) opponent Liberty University on Thursday, October 17 for a 4:30 p.m. tilt in Lynchburg.
"Playing the No. 6 ranked team, who just beat the No. 1 team in the country, is always going to be a tough challenge," said head coach Iain Byers. "The performance was fair. We definitely allowed them a couple of key players. There are a lot of lessons to be learned. We can take a lot away from this game that should hopefully set us up well for the Liberty game this week and the Radford game following that, which are two big conference games. We're proud of some of the girls for their performances today, and we've got to work on the rest to make sure that they improve in the next weeks."
The Eagles attacked early in the game, logging the first six shots of the day, including one off the stick of Hromisin that ricocheted off the pads of senior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding/Tickhill, England and into the cage to give Boston College a 1-0 lead less than seven minutes into play. Sophomore Nicole Deckard/Selinsgrove, Pa. recorded the first attempt of the contest for the Lancers, but her ball sailed wide. BC quickly regained possession, firing off another six shots, but Longwood played solid defense aided by three saves from Goulding. Sophomores Emily Leonard/Virginia Beach and Ruiter retaliated with back-to-back chances, although one was turned away and one dribbled wide. The Eagles extended their advantage to 2-0 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half, as Chapin Duke tapped in the rebound after teammate Virgynia Muma's initial shot. BC would score once more in the final seconds of the period to take a 3-0 advantage into halftime.
Coming out of the break, de Grandhomme made a great defensive save on a BC penalty corner attempt to maintain the three-goal difference. Ruiter logged her second chance of the day that was turned away by opposing keeper Leah Settipane. Boston College outshot Longwood, 9-1, in the next 20 minutes, while pulling ahead 4-0 on Hromisin's second goal of the day. The Lancers' lone shot was a slap by sophomore Hollie MacDonald/Yorktown that was blocked. Longwood earned a penalty corner with less than two minutes to play and came close to converting with shots by de Grandhomme and sophomore Jennifer Burris/Virginia Beach, but was unable to do so, as the Eagles sealed the 4-0 decision.
Boston College outshot Longwood, 29-7, in the outing. Goulding recorded 11 saves in the complete game performance. Sunday's match marked just the third meeting ever between Longwood and Boston College in the sport of field hockey. The Eagles now hold a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series.
