FARMVILLE, Va. - Senior Channy Johnson, in usual form, scored for the Lancers, but Longwood field hockey could not finish a second-half rally, falling to Queens University, 3-1.
Johnson's goal came in the third quarter as part of the Lancers rally with graduate student Meghan Hyatt earning the assist. Junior Sophie Mooldijk made 11 saves.
"Lots of effort from the team today. Need to focus on consistency through the whole game and finishing our opportunities.
First game of the year does not define us. We will learn from this and continue pushing forward."
How It Happened
- Longwood (0-1) dominated the first quarter possession game, attempting three shots on goal. Queens goalkeeper Madison Destefano denied all attempts on goal in the first, making three saves.
- In the second, the tides changed. Queens' Grace Wagner found the back of the cage in the 23rd minute, giving Queens (1-1) a 1-0 halftime lead. Mooldijk made four saves in the first half.
- The Royals started the third with a bang as Delfina Gonzalez tapped in with a pass from Olivia Gains to extend the lead to 2-0. Eight minutes later, the Lancers started their comeback, with Johnson getting one past Destefano to cut the deficit to one.
- Longwood outshot Queens, 7-3, in the third quarter and put seven of its 12 second-half shots on goal. Unfortunately, the Lancers could not find the equalizer as Destefano made five second-half saves and defender Ines Stirling cleared two off the line for defensive saves.
- Liv Rainwater found a loose ball in front of Mooldijk and tapped it in for the final margin with just 4:35 left.
- Queens outshot Longwood, 21-19, but the Lancers generated 11 penalty corners compared to eight for the Royals.
