Crystal Smith|Richmond was named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week, while rookie teammate
Daeisha Brown|Richmond garnered The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week honors for games played January 3-6, the conference announced today.
Smith led the Lancers to back-to-back conference home wins last week, averaging 27.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists, while shooting a perfect 100% (16-16) on free throw opportunities, to help the team improve to an undefeated 3-0 in league play. On Jan. 3, the senior guard set a new career high with 32 points, including a personal-best 12 made free throws, in the squad's 87-75 victory against Gardner-Webb University. She followed that performance with her first double-double of the season, tallying 23 points and 11 rebounds, in the Lancers' 79-74 win against Winthrop University. Smith narrowly missed a triple-double, as she added nine assists in the contest. The honor marks Longwood's first-ever Big South Player of the Week nod. Smith also earned Madness Mid-Major Women's Basketball Player of the Week accolades from collegesportsmadness.com for her performance last week.
Brown notched 17.0 points per game and added seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals in Longwood's most recent Big South wins. She totaled 14 points, five boards, three assists and three steals against the Runnin' Bulldogs before shooting 54% (7-13) from the floor to post 20 points against the Eagles. Brown also recorded four assists, two steals and two rebounds in the team's closely-contested victory over Winthrop. In the two-game span, the rookie guard shot 46% (11-24) from the field, including 50% (1-2) on three-pointers and 73% (11-15) on free throws. This is her second-straight Freshman of the Week honor.
