OXFORD, Ohio – The Longwood University field hockey team dropped a 6-4 decision at Miami University (Ohio) (1-4) on Saturday afternoon in Oxford, Ohio. The Lancers (0-6) will remain in Oxford to take on Ball State in a neutral-site contest on Sunday, September 9 at 12 p.m.

Jessica Diaz|Chesapeake (Western Branch) each found the back of the cage for the Lancers on Saturday. Burris and Diaz each tallied one assist, as well, to lead the squad with three points apiece. Senior goalkeeper
Amy Lewis|Lewisville, N.C. (Forsyth Country Day) earned the complete game decision in the cage for LU, making six saves on 22 shots faced.
The Lancers took a quick lead less than three minutes into play when Diaz made a pass to the center of the circle that found Burris, who put a shot on goal to give her squad a 1-0 advantage.
The Redhawks posted three straight shots and a penalty corner on their next possession, but the Lancers defense extinguished the opportunity to maintain their one goal lead.
Six minutes into the half, Longwood was awarded a corner opportunity of their own, and after a shot by junior midfielder de Grandhomme that was saved by Miami's goalkeeper, the Lancers were issued a penalty stroke. de Grandhomme took the stroke for LU, firing a hard shot on cage to put her team up, 2-0.
Longwood extended its lead to 3-0 with just over 22 minutes remaining in the first half on a goal by Deckard, but the Redhawks got on the board shortly after, as Lizi Kuhl set up Kaitlin Evans for the score.
The Lancers retaliated to take back their three-goal buffer when Burris fed Diaz, who took the ball on a breakaway and beat the keeper to make it a 4-1 game.
Miami would not go quietly, pulling within one goal by converting on two penalty corners before the first half expired. Ali Froede and Emily Gruesser both found the back of the cage on corner plays for the Redhawks to make it a 4-3 contest at the break.
Miami scored three second half goals to earn the victory. Less than three minutes into the second period, Gruesser scored the Redhawks' third penalty corner goal of the game and her second of the day to knot the match at 4-4. After over 20 minutes of scoreless action, Miami scored two, back-to-back goals to take its first lead of the day. Alyssa Logan converted on a corner before she sent a cross to the near the post that was picked up and put on goal by Gruesser to complete her hat trick and seal the 6-4 victory for Miami.
