Longwood Drops 2-1 Decision at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Longwood University field hockey team was defeated, 2-1, by Lock Haven University of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Sunday afternoon in Lock Haven, Pa. Junior midfielder Stacey de Grandhomme | Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) tallied a game-high eight shots and was responsible for the Lancers (0-2) lone goal against the Bald Eagles (1-1). Longwood returns to action on Friday, August 31 at 7 p.m. when the squad hosts in-state foe The College of William and Mary of the Colonial Athletic Association in its home opener at the Athletics Complex in Farmville, Va.

The Lancers jumped out to an early, 1-0 lead, when de Grandhomme converted on a penalty corner just over six minutes into the first half. Senior Kaity Byrum | Suffolk (Lakeland) and freshman Jennifer Burris | Virginia Beach (Kempsville) each recorded an assist on the play with a solid input and stick stop to set up their teammate for the goal.

Lock Haven quickly answered with two back-to-back goals. Jennifer Felice redirected a pass from teammate Stephanie Ebersole to tie the game at one at 16:35 in the first half, and 20 seconds later, Nakira Downes found Nikki Weaknecht open near the left post to notch the eventual game-winner.

The teams battled through a physical second half, but neither squad was able to find the back of the net. Lock Haven totaled 16 shots, compared to Longwood's 11, and earned more penalty corners, 10-9.

In addition to de Grandhomme's eight shots, Byrum notched two and senior Brittany Diaz | Chesapeake (Western Branch) tallied one. Freshman goalkeeper Meg Mitchell | Allentown, Pa. (Emmaus) recorded the complete-game decision in goal for Longwood, making six saves in the outing.

Kelly Harsh led the Bald Eagles with four shots, while Taylor Kennedy and Megan Evans each added three.
