Longwood Drops 3-1 Decision To Richmond

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey dropped a 3-1 decision to the visiting University of Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Sophomore Stacey de Grandhomme|Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) scored the lone goal for the Lancers (3-5) against the Spiders (4-3). Longwood returns to action on Wednesday, September 21, when it travels to face the top-ranked University of North Carolina at 7 p.m. in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Richmond's Christina Amorose scored two goals over a 3:30 period in the first half to take the 2-0 lead in the 14th minute. de Grandhomme cut the Spiders' lead to one after she ripped a shot from the right side with just 0:21 remaining in the first period to make the halftime score 2-1. The Lancers outshot UR 7-4 with a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners in the opening half.

The Spiders added a goal in the 50th minute to increase the lead to 3-1. de Grandhomme had a shot that was stopped by the Richmond goalkeeper and senior Amanda Babineau|Stafford (Mountain View) collected the rebound, but her putback attempt was also stopped by UR in the 52nd minute. de Grandhomme had another shot stopped by the goalkeeper after a penalty corner in the 60th minute, then a defender stepped behind the goalkeeper to stop a shot at the right post in the 65th minute to stall the Longwood attack. The Lancers attempted seven shots in the second half, with five shots on goal.

Longwood outshot Richmond 14-10 and had an 8-5 advantage on penalty corners. de Grandhomme attempted a match-high eight shots with six shots on goal, while junior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded four saves. The Spiders were paced by Amorose with two goals on three shots, while Anna Zarkoski made six saves in goal.
