FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Lock Haven University of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Senior
Rachel Akers|Virginia Beach (First Colonial) scored her first career goal for the Lancers (1-1) against the Eagles (1-1) in the 37th minute. Longwood returns to action on Saturday, September 3, when it faces Sacred Heart University at 2 p.m. on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 after a pair of goals in the first six minutes. Nicole Weaknecht sent a ball under the goalkeeper from the top of the circle in the second minute followed shortly by a goal off a rebound by Kelsie Minnich. The Lancers controlled play for the rest of the period, allowing just one more shot, but could not convert on eight shot attempts and seven penalty corners and trailed 2-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Lancers cut the lead to one when

Christina Verhulst|Yorktown (Grafton) was just high. Sophomore
Stacey de Grandhomme|Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) had a shot on a penalty corner that got past the goalkeeper, but Beverly Rhule made her second defensive save of the match to preserve the 2-1 lead for Lock Haven with 37 seconds remaining. A final shot by de Grandhomme sailed wide for the Lancers with 25 seconds left in the match.
Longwood outshot Lock Haven 16-6 and had a 14-3 advantage in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper
Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded four saves and allowed two goals in 70 minutes. de Grandhomme led the Lancers with six shots, including three shots on goal, while Verhulst attempted three shots. Lindsay Staufenberg allowed one goal with four saves in 70 minutes for the Eagles.
