BOX SCORE GAME ONE

BOX SCORE GAME TWO

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader on the road at the College of William and Mary of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg. The Lancers (27-15) won the opener against the Tribe (23-25) by a score of 4-2 before taking the nightcap by a similar score of 4-1 for the program's first-ever sweep of a twinbill against William and Mary. Longwood veteran 33rd-year head coach Buddy Bolding (899-492-4) attained career coaching victory number 899 as well. Senior captain Chris Briere|Midlothian (James River) gained the pitching win in game one with 7.0 strong innings, and junior captain and closer Mark Montgomery|Williamsburg (Bruton) earned his ninth save in the opener. Junior Matt Gwaltney|Chesterfield (Matoaca) followed with a complete game pitching win in game two with 7.0 solid innings as well. Longwood will play again on Tuesday night, May 10, remaining on the road at James Madison University of the CAA in Harrisonburg beginning at 6:30 p.m.

In the opener, William and Mary took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two innings as Derrick Osteen (1-3) led-off the first with a single and later scored unearned via a fielding error. In the second, Stephen Arcure (1-4) led-off with a single as well and crossed the plate courtesy a one-out RBI double by Jonathan Slattery (1-3, rbi). Briere settled down, however, and retired the next 10-straight batters before hitting a batter in the fifth with two outs, but promptly retired seven of the next eight batters around a one-out error in the seventh. It was an impressive stretch that saw him retire 17 of 19 batters without allowing a hit after the second inning as Longwood battled back at the plate and eventually won the game.

Briere (1-4) got things started in the fifth when he reached base on a fielder's choice and later scored with two outs during a run-down play between first and second base initiated by freshman Alex Owens|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (3-4, rbi) who had singled. Sophomore Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (1-4, 2 rbi) provided the clutch, two-out hit with a two-run double to right field in the eighth that scored Owens and senior captain Brant Jones|Richmond (Monacan) (1-2). Owens had led-off the inning with a single, and Jones was intentionally walked just ahead of Lacy who made the Tribe suffer for their decision. The Lancers added an insurance run in the ninth as Briere hit a two-out double and scored on Owens' third hit.

Senior Troy Dickman|Manakin Sabot (Midlothian) replaced Briere in the eighth and retired the only batter he faced before Montgomery entered and retired five of the final six batters around another error. Briere (7-2) got the pitching win with the first 7.0 innings, yielding just three hits and two runs, one earned, with no walks and three strikeouts. Montgomery (9) earned his ninth save with the final 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits with no walks and three strikeouts, including the final two of the game.

In the nightcap, Longwood scored first with a run in the third as Briere (2-3, rbi) led-off with a single and scored on a two-out passed ball. William and Mary tied it at 1-1 with a run in the fifth when Osteen (0-2) walked with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Ryan Brown (1-4, rbi). The Lancers went ahead for good with another run in the sixth after freshman Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) (1-3) singled to lead-off and crossed the plate on a two-out RBI double to left field from Briere. The visitors added two more runs in the seventh when freshman Matt Dickason|Chesapeake (Indian River) (1-2) walked to open the inning and scored on a run-scoring single by Lacy (2-4, rbi), while Jones (0-3) walked as well and scored on a two-out RBI single from junior Dustin Sollars|Midlothian (Cosby) (2-4, rbi).

Gwaltney (5-5) took the pitching victory for Longwood with 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits and one run, earned, with one walk and three strikeouts.
