Baseball Duo Named to CSC Academic All-District Team

Gomez, Jones Recognized for Academic, Athletic Excellence

FARMVILLE, Va. – Two Longwood baseball players have been named to the 2026 Academic All-District® NCAA Division I Team as selected by the College Sports Communicators, the organization announced Tuesday.

Junior Brogan Jones along with redshirt-sophomore Joe Gomez both earned the honor.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale, appear in 90 percent of the institution's games played or must start in at least 66 percent of the institution's games. For pitchers, a student-athlete must have made at least 17 appearances or pitched at least 35 innings.

Since 1952, the award has recognized the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Academic All-America® program recognizes softball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Jones, majoring in business administration, was the starting second baseman throughout the year for Longwood. He hit .270 in his 56 games, all starts, while swatting six home runs to go with eight doubles and two triples. In addition, Jones was second on the team with 51 runs scored, and he had 37 RBI. The athletic infielder also stole 19 bases.

Jones came up clutch as well during Longwood's Big South Tournament run. In the team's extra-innings win over Winthrop, he drove in three of the team's four runs, including the go-ahead run in the 11th inning.

Gomez, also majoring in business administration, recorded a 3.63 ERA over 18 appearances this season out of the bullpen for the Lancers. He went 1-0 while striking out 24 batters in 17.1 innings. He held opposing teams to a .175 batting average, and the California native surrendered only seven earned runs in his first season in Farmville.

The righthanded reliever also played a critical role in Longwood's Big South Tournament run. He set a career best with 3.2 scoreless innings in the first Big South Championship game, with his five strikeouts helping Longwood win and force the 'if necessary' final game. That win was Longwood's fifth straight in the tournament, and Gomez gave up one hit and two walks in his best outing as a Lancer.

Longwood baseball set a variety of program milestones this season. The team won 34 games, matching their Division I best, and advanced to the Big South Championship game for the first time by winning five straight games in the conference tournament. The five wins were more than double the previous program high-water mark. Longwood also saw a 20-win improvement from 2025, matching the mark set by the 1991 team that advanced to the Division II World Series.
