RICHMOND, Va. – The Longwood University men's tennis team defeated NJIT on the final day of the National Independent Tournament, going a perfect 3-0 to repeat as champions. Junior Nobu Tanaka|Potomac, Md. (St. Johns College HS) earned a spot on the All-Tournament team, including recognition as the tournament's MVP, an honor which he also won in the 2010 tournament. He won his match against NJIT (9-14) 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles for his 11th win in a row, improving his spring record to 12-6. The Lancers (11-7) host Seattle on Sunday, April 17, at 10 a.m. in their final match of the 2011 campaign.

Freshman Crescente Lesser|Santiago, Chile (La Reina) also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team after winning against his No. 3 Highlanders' foe 6-1, 6-1, giving him a nine-match win streak. Sophomore Marc Ferrigno|Hvidovre, Denmark (Brondby Gymnasium) topped his No. 2 foe 6-3, 6-4, putting him on a four-match win streak, while freshman Jimmy Davis|Manassas (Stonewall Jackson) went 7-5, 6-3 for the win at No. 4, also winning his fourth match in a row. Freshmen Edward Becker|Sydney, Australia (Manly Selective Campus)  and Hunter Barnes|Chesapeake (Grassfield) did not need to finish their No. 5 and No. 6 matches, respectively, but each was ahead when they were stopped. Becker was up 6-3 and Barnes was winning 4-1.

The singles matches were played first and since Longwood won four, the final two singles matches did not need to be finished and all doubles matches were unneeded.
