Longwood Falls At #3 Notre Dame 92-26

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell 92-26 at the third-ranked University of Notre Dame of the Big East Conference on Wednesday afternoon in Notre Dame, Indiana. Senior Brittanni Billups|Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) paced the Lancers with eight points, and junior Heather Tobeck|La Porte, Texas (La Porte) blocked three shots to set the school's career blocked shot record with 109 blocks. Devereaux Peters led four Notre Dame (12-1) double-digit scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Longwood (2-12) returns to action on Saturday, December 31, when it travels to face Appalachian State University of the Southern Conference at 12 p.m. in Boone, North Carolina.

Notre Dame opened the game on a 27-0 run before junior Mieke Elkington|Hamilton, New Zealand (Cochise College) hit a jumper to put the Lancers on the board with 11:37 remaining in the first half. The Fighting Irish led 45-14 at halftime. Billups scored all eight of her points in the second half, and Notre Dame extended the lead to 92-26.

Billups paced the Lancers with eight points (4-10 FG) and three blocks. Freshman Megan Baltzell|Stafford (Mountain View) added six points (2-3 FG, 1-2 FT) and four rebounds. Elkington led the Lancers with six rebounds and added three points. Junior Crystal Smith|Richmond (Meadowbrook) dished out a team-best four assists. Longwood shot 23.9% (11-46) from the floor, including 18.2% (2-11) from behind the arc, and 33.3% (2-6) from the foul line. The Lancers scored 10 points off of 10 Notre Dame turnovers and added eight second-chance points.

Peters led the Fighting Irish with 19 points (9-13 FG) and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Skylar Diggins added 11 points and 10 assists. Natalie Novosel scored 11 points (4-7 FG, 3-5 3FG) and Fraderica Miller add 10 points (4-8 FG, 2-2 FT). Notre Dame dished out 26 assists and made 26 steals, while turning 33 Longwood turnovers in to 42 points. The Fighting Irish shot 43.7% (38-87) from the floor, including 33.3% (7-21) from behind the arc, and 60% (9-15) from the foul line.

Tobeck recorded three blocks to move past Sandy Rawdon (1985-89) on the school's all-time block list. She has blocked 22 shots this season and has 109 blocks in her career.

The game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 9,149, the largest crowd the Longwood women's basketball team has ever played for.
