Longwood Falls To #16 California 3-0 In NorPac Tournament Semifinals

STANFORD, Calif. - The Longwood University field hockey team fell to the University of California 3-0 on Friday afternoon in Stanford, California, in the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) Tournament semifinals. Junior Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) made 11 saves for the Lancers (12-9) against the 16th-ranked Golden Bears (15-3). Longwood returns to action on Saturday, November 5, when it faces the loser of #1W Stanford University and #2E Davidson College at 2 p.m. ET in the NorPac Tournament consolation match in Stanford.

The Lancers had a flurry of activity in the 17th minute, but a pair of shots by sophomore Stacey de Grandhomme|Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) were stopped by the Cal goalkeeper. Cal scored the match-winner at 33:16 when Erin Magill scored on a penalty corner. Senior Olga Knop|Berlin, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) had a pair of shots off penalty corners the second half, but one shot sailed wide and the other was stopped by the Cal goalkeeper. The Golden Bears added two second-half goals to win 3-0.

California outshot Longwood 19-8, including a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal, and edged the Lancers 5-4 in penalty corners. de Grandhomme paced the Lancers with three shots, all on goal, while Knop and junior Christina Verhulst|Yorktown (Grafton) added two shots each. Goulding recorded 11 saves while playing all 70 minutes in goal. The Golden Bears were led by Andrea Earle with five shots, all on goal, and one goal. Lara Kruggel added one goal on two shots. Maddie Hand made four saves while playing 65:00 in goal, while Courtney Hendrickson added one save in the final five minutes.­
