Longwood Clinches NorPac East Division Title With 2-0 Victory Over Appalachian State

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey team clinched the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) East Division with a 2-0 shutout victory over Appalachian State University on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Seniors Amanda Babineau|Stafford (Mountain View) and Sarah Bietsch|Chambersburg, Pa. (Chambersburg Area) scored for the Lancers (11-8, 5-1 NorPac) against the Mountaineers (2-16, 1-5 NorPac) on Senior Day. The program has reached 11 wins for the first time since 2000 when it posted a 15-5 record. Longwood, the top-seed in the NorPac East Division, returns to action on Thursday, November 3, when it faces the University of the Pacific, the fourth-seed from the West Division, at 7 p.m. ET in Stanford, California in the NorPac Tournament.

Longwood took the lead at 20:00 when Babineau took a pass from sophomore Stacey de Grandhomme|Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) and scored on a shot over the diving goalkeeper. The Lancers added an insurance goal at 29:23 when Bietsch took a pass from junior Christina Verhulst|Yorktown (Grafton) and scored her first goal of the season.

The Lancers outshot Appalachian State 17-6, including 7-5 in shots on goal, and had a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners. de Grandhomme attempted a match-high seven shots, while senior Alison Akers|Virginia Beach (First Colonial) added three shots. Junior Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded five saves in the shutout victory, her third of the season and second in conference play. ASU was led by Jessi Stuart with two shots, while Bridgette Street made five saves while playing the duration in goal.

Longwood recognized six seniors prior to the match. Honored for their contributions to the program were Alison Akers, Rachel Akers|Virginia Beach (First Colonial), Amanda Babineau, Sarah Bietsch, Olga Knop|Berlin, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) and fifth-year senior Lauren Sullivan|Fredericksburg (Stafford).
