Longwood Earns 3-1 NorPac Victory At Radford

RADFORD, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey team earned a 3-1 Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) victory at Radford University on Sunday afternoon in Radford. Sophomore Stacey de Grandhomme|Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) scored the match-winner on a penalty stroke in the 38th minute for the Lancers (9-8, 3-1 NorPac) against the Highlanders (7-8, 2-3 NorPac). Longwood returns to action on Saturday, October 22, when it hosts Davidson College in a NorPac contest at 2 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.

The Lancers withstood three early penalty corners by the Highlanders before freshman Jessica Diaz|Chesapeake (Western Branch) took a ball into the circle and shot and scored from the middle at 19:38 to give Longwood the 1-0 lead. Lynsey Daughtrey scored for Radford at 32:54 to tie the match 1-1. The Lancers took the lead for good at 37:31 when de Grandhomme converted a penalty stroke opportunity. Senior Olga Knop|Berlin, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) added an insurance goal at 65:28 off a penalty corner that was inserted by senior Rachel Akers|Virginia Beach (First Colonial) and stopped by senior Sarah Bietsch|Chambersburg, Pa. (Chambersburg Area).

The Lancers outshot the Highlanders 13-11, while Radford had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal and 10-8 edge in penalty corners. de Grandhomme attempted a team-high five shots, while junior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded five saves while playing all 70 minutes in goal. Courtney Poole led the Highlanders with five shots, while Sidney Encarnacion made two saves while playing the duration in goal.
