RICHMOND, Va. - The Longwood University men's tennis team defeated the Temple Owls, 3-2, playing a 4-1, five-point format, but fell to the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University - ranked #74 in the ITA poll - on the second and final day of the VCU 4x1 Invitational January 30 in Richmond. Freshman
Jimmy Davis|Manassas (Stonewall Jackson) notched the deciding point against Temple with his 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. The Lancers will be back in action Saturday, February 12 to host Shaw at 1:00 p.m. in Farmville.
In the No. 3 position against the Owls, freshman
Crescente Lesser|Santiago, Chile (La Reina) won with two scores of 6-2, while sophomore
Marc Ferrigno|Hvidovre, Denmark (Brondby Gymnasium) took his No. 2 singles 6-4, 7-5.
Nobu Tanaka|Potomac, Md. (St. Johns College HS) dropped his No. 1 singles match 3-6, 2-6, as senior
Milo Barajas-Alexander|Arlington (Bishop O'Connell) and freshman
Edward Becker|Sydney, Australia (Manly Selective Campus) dropped the only doubles match 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.
Versus the Rams, Tanaka dropped his No. 1 match 4-6, 0-6 and Ferrigno was topped at No. 2 by a score of 3-6, 1-6. In position 3 and 4, Lesser lost 5-7, 2-6, and Barajas-Alexander fell 0-6, 0-6, respectively. Davis and Becker paired up for the lone doubles action also falling, 3-6, 5-7.
