Longwood Drops Season Opener at #24 Virginia Tech 7-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. -
The Longwood University men's tennis team lost its opening match of the 2011 season to #24 Virginia Tech, 7-0, on the road Saturday night in Blacksburg. Freshman Jimmy Davis|Manassas (Stonewall Jackson) and sophomore Marc Ferrigno|Hvidovre, Denmark (Brondby Gymnasium) paired up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Pedro Graber and Corrado Degl' Incerti Tocci, 8-6, in the Lancers only victory of the day. Longwood returns to action January 29-30 in Richmond for the VCU 4x1 Invitational where they will face Richmond, Temple and VCU.
 
In other doubles action, freshman Crescente Lesser|Santiago, Chile (La Reina) and junior Nobu Tanaka| Potomac, Md. (St. Johns College HS) fell at the No. 2 position, 8-2, while senior Milo Barajas-Alexander|Arlington (Bishop O'Connell) and freshman Edward Becker|Sydney, Australia (Manly Selective Campus) lost at No. 3, 8-4.
 
Tanaka fell at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, while Ferrigno lost in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 9-11, at No. 2. In the No. 3 slot, Lesser dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision and a 6-0, 6-2 score put Davis in the losing column, too. Barajas-Alexander tallied a 6-3, 6-2 loss in his No. 5 position, while Barnes was shutout in two sets of 6-0 at No. 6.
