FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader past visiting University of Maryland-Baltimore County of the America East Conference Friday afternoon at Bolding Stadium in Farmville, winning the first game 8-5 and the second game 7-2. The Lancers (13-12) were led by senior
Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) with five hits and three RBI, while senior
Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) pitched a complete-game victory against the Retrievers (4-15) in the nightcap. Longwood will enjoy the Easter Weekend off before playing again next Tuesday, April 6, on the road at VMI of the Big South Conference in Lexington beginning at 6 p.m..
In the opener, Longwood allowed UMBC to take an early 3-0 advantage after two innings before scoring four runs in the third to lead 4-3. The Retrievers scored two more runs in the fifth to lead 5-4 before the Lancers again scored four runs, this time in the seventh, providing the final three-run margin of victory.
In the third, senior
Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-4, RBI) had a run-scoring single, Cerreto (2-4, 3 RBI) added an RBI double, and senior
Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (2-4, 3 RBI) contributed a two-run triple. In the seventh, Cerreto had a two-run triple while Kimble and senior
Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-4, RBI) each added run-scoring singles. Junior
Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (2-4) also contributed two hits to the win.
Freshman
Kyler Morgan/Lancaster, Pa. (Lampeter-Strasburg) (3-0) earned his third pitching win this season for Longwood with 2.2 innings of scoreless middle relief, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore
Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) (3) picked-up his third save this season with the final 2.0 shutout innings for the Lancers, yielding no hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Max Himmelstein (2-3, RBI) and Curtis Schickner (2-5, RBI) each had two hits and an RBI for UMBC, while Ed Bach (2-4) took the pitching loss for the Retrievers with 4.0 innings of relief, allowing seven hits and four runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and one walk.
In the nightcap, Harting (4-0) posted his first complete-game on the mound this year in just his second start, scattering five hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and two walks over the 7.0 innings. He only allowed single runs in both the second and third innings en route to his fourth win this season. Longwood scored a run in the second, four runs in the fourth, and two more runs in the fifth to secure the five-run margin of triumph.

Dustin Sollars/Midlothian (Cosby) (2-3, 3 RBI) hit a two-out, solo home run to left field -- his first homer this year. In the fourth, sophomore
Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (1-3, RBI) had an RBI double and Sollars added a two-run single, while in the fifth, freshman
Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (2-3, 2 RBI) added a two-run home run to right field -- his fourth homer this season. Cerreto (3-4) had three hits in the game for the Lancers.
Brian Klukowicz (1-3, RBI) and Aaron Brill (1-3, RBI) each had a hit and an RBI for UMBC, while Sean Swetnam (0-2) took the pitching loss for the Retrievers with the first 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, four earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.
