Longwood Falls On The Road At Radford 8-2

RADFORD, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 8-2 baseball decision on the road at Radford University of the Big South Conference Wednesday afternoon in Radford. The Lancers (17-15) were led by sophomore Dustin Sollars/Midlothian (Cosby) with three hits against the Highlanders (15-16). Longwood will not play again until next Tuesday, April 20, at the College of William and Mary from the Colonial Athletic Association in Williamsburg beginning at 7 p.m..

Longwood fell behind 3-0 through four innings as Radford scored single runs in each of the first, third, and fourth innings. The Lancers scored their only two runs of the contest in the fifth to briefly close to within 3-2 before the Highlanders scored four runs in the fifth to lead 7-2, and RU added a run in the seventh for the final six-run margin.

In the fifth, junior Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (2-5, RBI) led-off the inning with a solo home run to left for his third homer this season. Senior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-3) followed and was hit-by-a-pitch and scored on a one-out sacrifice fly to center by senior Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (0-3, RBI). Sollars (3-4) led Longwood with three hits, while senior Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-5) added two hits as well. Sollars, Jones, Havers, and Cerreto combined for the nine hits by the Lancers.

Radford was led offensively by Raphael Turner (2-4, 3 RBI) and Tyren Rivers (3-5, RBI) as each hit solo home runs among their respective multiple hits. Turner added a two-run double as well for the Highlanders while Phil Bondi (1-4, RBI) also had a solo homer for the hosts.

Junior Troy Dickman/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-4) took the pitching loss for Longwood, allowing seven hits and six runs, all earned, with one strikeout and two walks over the first 4.0 innings.

Paul DeVito (1-2) had the mound win for Radford with the first 4.0 scoreless innings, scattering four hits with one strikeout and one walk. Shane Pysh (1) was credited with the save with the final 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and no walk.

Cerreto, Havers, and Jones each extended their respective current hitting streaks to 12, 11, and seven games. Longwood will host Radford for Senior Night in Farmville next month on May 11 at Bolding Stadium beginning at 6 p.m..
