Longwood Places Four On 2009 NFHCA Academic Squad

March 31, 2010

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University field hockey team placed four student-athletes on the 2009 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. Junior Andrea Bastiaanse/Granby, Conn. (Granby Memorial), sophomores Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens Gymnasium) and Bailey Rampey/Fredericksburg (Courtland) and freshman Taylor Bender/Harrisburg, Pa. (Central Dauphin) were recognized for having a 3.30 GPA through the first semester of the 2009-10 academic year.

“We are very proud of Andrea, Taylor, Bailey and Olga,” said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. “Being a student-athlete adds extra demands to any student and to get such high grades while being in season is a tremendous act. Hopefully next year we can increase the number of our players receiving this award, which is very important to us.”

Bastiannse, Knop and Rampey are two-time honorees after being named to the squad last year.

Bastiaanse, a chemistry major with a pre-pharmacy concentration and a biology minor, scored two goals while appearing in 19 games. She scored the game-winning goal against Siena (3-2) and at Appalachian State (2-1).

Knop, a psychology major, scored four goals and added two assists while starting 20 games last season. She scored two goals at La Salle and scored the game-winning goal in the season-opener against Georgetown.

Bender, a business major, scored one goal with four assists in 15 games last season while Rampey, a history major, appeared in one game for the Lancers.
