Longwood Pair Earns All-Independent Second-Team Honors

2009-10 All-Independent Women's Basketball Team

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University women's basketball sophomore Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) and freshman Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) earned 2009-10 All-Independent Second-Team honors after being voted on by coaches and sports information directors at the seven Independent schools. The Independent Player of the Year is Katie Williams (18.1p, 6.6r) of CSU Bakersfield, the Independent Newcomer of the Year is Joanna Miller (19.1p, 5.6r) of N.C. Central and the Independent Coach of the Year is Tim La Kose (16-13) of CSU Bakersfield.

Billups was second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game. She led the Lancers in field goal percentage, shooting .447 from the floor, while averaging a team-high 5.2 rebounds per game. She also blocked 35 shots, second on the team. Billups led the team in scoring seven times this season and was the top rebounder on the team in 13 games. She set a new career-high three times over a five-game stretch, including a career-high 25 points against Troy (2.10). Billups grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds against Savannah State (2.13). She notched three double-doubles and had 16 double-digit scoring games.

Coward led the team in scoring, averaging 11.4 points per game and 4.3 field goals per game. She was second in rebounds with five per game and third in blocked shots with 20 on the season. She led the team in scoring 10 times and was the leading rebounder in eight games. Coward scored in double-figures 19 times in 28 games and scored a career-high 21 points twice, at Troy (11.24) and at home against VCU (12.28). She had three double-doubles, including the last two games of the season.
