FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey team defeated Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) opponent Appalachian State University 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville on Senior Day. The Lancers (6-12, 4-2 NorPac) were led by senior Lauren van de Kamp | Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal) and junior Amanda Babineau | Stafford (Mountain View) who scored one goal each against the Mountaineers (5-11, 1-4 NorPac). Seniors Andrea Bastiaanse | Granby, Conn. (Granby Memorial), Kimberly Sullivan | Fredericksburg (Stafford) and van de Kamp were recognized before the match. The Lancers return to action on Thursday, November 4, when they travel to Davidson, North Carolina, for the NorPac Tournament.

"It was a great way for our seniors to go out," said third-year head coach Iain Byers. "The seniors deserved to win. We look forward to continuing our run at NorPacs. We're interested to see who the opponent is."

Longwood controlled possession throughout the first half, but did not score until the 35th minute, when Babineau took a pass from freshman Stacey de Grandhomme | Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) and scored from the left side with just 14 second remaining in the first half. Junior Rachel Akers | Virginia Beach (First Colonial) helped preserve the shutout after she came up with a defensive save in the 11th minute. The Lancers outshot ASU 12-2 in the first half.

In the second half, Longwood continued to control the flow of the match. The Lancers attempted seven shots before de Grandhomme sent a shot that the Mountaineers' Bridgette Street stopped, but van de Kamp collected the loose ball in front of the net and sent it under Street to put Longwood ahead 2-0 in the 59th minute.

Longwood outshot Appalachian State 24-3 and had a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore Kaye Goulding | Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) was credited with the shutout victory. The Lancers were led offensively by Babineau and van de Kamp with one goal each, while de Grandhomme attempted a match-high eight shots. Five other Lancers attempted multiple shots. Street made 10 saves for the Mountaineers.
