Longwood Welcomes ACC-Member Maryland To Willett Hall Sunday At 2 p.m.

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University women's basketball program is set to host the University of Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) on Sunday, January 31, at 2 p.m. in Willett Hall on campus in Farmville for the “NCAA Pack The House Challenge". The game marks the first time the women's basketball team has welcomed an ACC team to Willett Hall and is the first meeting between the two programs. Longwood (5-16) is coached by third-year head coach Kristin Caruso and is led by freshman Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) who is averaging 10.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Maryland (15-6), who won the 2006 national championship, is coached by eighth-year head coach Brenda Frese and is led by Diandra Tchatchouang who is averaging 13.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Tickets remain and will be available at the Willett Hall Ticket Office or by calling 434.395.2138. Any weather-related changes to this contest will be announced on the Longwood Athletics website and locally as well via Farmville area radio stations.

Scouting Maryland
Maryland is 15-6 on the season and coming off a 60-44 win over Virginia Tech on Thursday night that snapped a three-game losing streak. The Terrapins have wins over the University of Virginia (61-60), Old Dominion (84-67) and Saint Joseph's (79-69) with losses to #6/7 Duke (57-58), #25/RV Mississippi State (55-84) and North Carolina (64-75). Maryland is led by Diandra Tchatchouang (13.0) who has scored in double-digits in 15 games this season and is the leading freshman scorer in the ACC. Other key contributors include Lynetta Kizer (12.3) and Lori Bjork (11.5) while averaging 69.0 points and allowing 60.0 points.

Scouting Longwood
Longwood snapped an eight-game losing streak on Tuesday against Winthrop University, rallying to defeat the Eagles 62-51 after trailing by as many as seven points in the second half. Sophomore forward Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) led the way for Longwood with career highs in points (24) and rebounds (13). Longwood improved to 5-16 with the win, including 4-3 in Willett Hall. The Lancers are led by freshman Chelsea Coward (10.7 points, 4.5 rebounds). The other projected starters are Billups (10.0p, 5.0r), senior Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) (7.1p, 3.5a), freshman Crystal Smith/Richmond (Meadowbrook) (7.6p, 3.0a) and junior Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland) (8.7p, 30.4% 3FG). Fernandes will be making her 100th-career start for the Lancers.

What Is Pack The House

The “NCAA Pack The House Challenge” was developed by the NCAA to promote women's basketball. The Lancers claimed the “Pack The House Challenge” among Independent programs during the 2007-08 season when 817 rowdy fans showed up to see Longwood upset Radford 70-69.
