Longwood Sweeps Doubleheader From Saint Peter's 4-3, 11-10 (10 innings)

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader against visiting Saint Peter's College Sunday afternoon at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning the first game 4-3 before taking the second game 11-10 in 10 innings.  Junior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) [4-5, 3 RBI] had four hits and three RBI on the day, and scored the winning run in the 10th inning of the nightcap after driving-in the winning run in the opener -- also producing the tying run of game two for the Lancers who improved to 7-6 with their third-straight win.  Brian Koster [5-7, 3 RBI] posted five hits and three RBI on the afternoon for the Peacocks who dropped to 2-10.  Longwood will play again on Monday, March 9, hosting Youngstown State University from Ohio at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 3 p.m..
   
In the nightcap, Longwood scored five runs in the first inning and led 8-3 after three innings before Saint Peter's scored five runs in the fourth to tie the game at 8-8.  The Peacocks added a run in the fifth and led 9-8 into the seventh before the Lancers scored again to tie it at 9-9.  The visitors scored a run in the 10th but the hosts rallied with two runs in the 10th to escape with the home triumph.  Havers (2-2, 2 RBI) had a one-out RBI single that scored sophomore Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-4) who had drawn a lead-off walk.  Havers would later cross the plate with the winning run on a throwing error at second base on a fielder's choice ball hit by junior David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (1-5, RBI).
   
Longwood's five runs in the first inning were courtesy of RBI from junior Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-4, 2 RBI) on a ground ball, Havers with a single, freshmen Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (1-4, RBI) with a sac fly, and classmate Dustin Sollars/Midlothian (Cosby) (2-3, RBI) with a single while senior Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-4) scored on a balk.  In the second, Cerreto added a sac fly, while in the third, senior Paul Heidler II/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-2, RBI) had an RBI single before Sollars scored during a run-down play involving Heidler.  The Lancers' run in the seventh came on an RBI single down the right field line by Smiy scoring Havers.
   
Junior Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (1-3) took the pitching win with the final 2.2 innings of relief, allowing no hits one earned run with no walks and two strikeouts.  Freshman Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) had pitched 4.0 innings of relief, scattering three hits and one earned run with no walks and four strikeouts.
   
In the opener, Longwood trailed 3-2 after five innings before scoring two runs in the sixth for the victory.  In the sixth, Jones (2-3, RBI) tied it at 3-3 with an RBI double, while Havers (2-3, RBI) won it with an RBI single scoring Jones.  Newman (1-3, 2 RBI) hit his team-leading second home run in the second, a two-out, two-run shot to left field.  Montgomery (1-0) got the mound win with the final 2.2 innings, yielding two hits and one earned run with one walk and three strikeouts.  Sophomore Luke Townsend/Virginia Beach (Ocean Lakes) had pitched the first 4.1 innings, scattering three hits and two earned runs with four walks and two strikeouts.
