Longwood Splits Doubleheader Against Lafayette; Lancers Win 10-8, Fall 12-6

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader with visiting Lafayette College Saturday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning the first game 10-8 before dropping the second game 12-6.  Freshman Dustin Sollars/Midlothian (Cosby) (2-4, 4 RBI) led the Lancers (14-8) to the come-from-behind victory in the opener with a game-winning grand slam home run, the first homer of his collegiate career, in the seventh inning as LU rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the third inning.  Classmate Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (2-4, 2 RBI) led the hosts in the nightcap with two hits and two RBI against the Leopards (8-9).  Longwood took two of three games from Lafayette, and will play again on Thursday, March 26, hosting the College of William and Mary at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 6 p.m..
   
In the opener, Longwood trailed 6-0 before scoring one un in the third and two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to make it 6-5.  Lafayette added a run in the sixth to lead 7-5 before the Lancers scored five runs in the decisive seventh.  The Leopards scored a final run in the ninth inning for the final margin.  Sollars provided the big blast in the seventh with his bases-loaded, one-out and first-pitch bomb over the left field fence for his first collegiate home run and dramatic grand slam.    Longwood also received a solo home run to left field from senior Jonathan Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-3, RBI) in the fourth, while freshman Matt Gwaltney/Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-3, 2 RBI) had a two-run single in the fifth inning.  Others driving in runs in the opener were juniors David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-3, RBI) and Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-5, RBI), along with sophomore Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-5, RBI).
   
Sophomore right-hander Troy Dickman/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-1) had the pitching win for Longwood with 4.0 innings of middle relief, allowing just three hits and one earned run with one walk and one strikeout.  Junior right-hander Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (5) earned his fifth save with the final 2.0 innings, yielding three hits and one earned run with no walks and two strikeouts.  It was also the 12th career save for Harting, a new program career record.
   
Brad Weiss (1-5, 3 RBI) led Lafayette with three RBI, while Rob Froio (2-4, 2 RBI) and A.J. Pisarri (2-3) each had two hits.  Ethan Perro (2-2) took the pitching loss for the Leopards with 1.2 innings of middle relief, allowing three hits and three earned runs with no walks and one strikeout.
   
In the nightcap, Lafayette scored five runs in the first inning on five singles and two walks and never looked back while adding two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings with three more runs in the seventh inning.  Longwood managed two runs in the second, one in the third, two in the sixth, and one run in the seventh inning.  Newman had two hits and two RBI in the nightcap, including a two-run double in the second, while Quigley (2-3, RBI), junior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-4, RBI), and Cerreto (2-4)?each collected two hits for the Lancers.  Havers had an RBI ground ball in the third, junior Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (1-4, RBI) had an RBI double in the sixth, while Quigley and freshman #D.J. Pomposini#/Danville (George Washington) (0-2, RBI) each contributed sacrifice flies. 
   
Freshman right-hander Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) (3-1) took the pitching loss with the first 4.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts.
   
Matt Hall (2-5, 4 RBI) led Lafayette with four RBI, while Froio (3-5, RBI) and Daniel Bierce (3-4, 2 RBI) each had three hits.  Ryan Hanna (3-1) took the pitching win for the Leopards with the first 5.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs with no walks and no strikeouts.
