FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 11-7 baseball decision to visiting Canisius College Thursday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, ending an eight-game winning streak. Senior
Jonathan Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-4, 3 RBI) led the Lancers (12-7) with two hits, including one of three home runs by the hosts, and three RBI. Kevin Mailloux (4-5, 4 RBI) led the Golden Griffins (7-9) with two home runs among his four hits and four RBI. Longwood will host Lafayette College for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday, March 20, at Lancer Stadium beginning at 3 p.m.. Admission is free to all Longwood baseball games.
Canisius scored a run in the first inning on a one-out RBI single by Shayne Willson (2-5, 2 RBI) but Longwood tied it at 1-1 with a run in the first as well when sophomore
Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (2-5, RBI) hit a one-out solo home run to left field. The Griffins added two runs in the third as Mailloux hit a two-run homer to left, and CC made it 4-1 with a run in the sixth after a lead-off home run to left by Brian Burton (4-5, RBI). Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-5, 2 RBI) hit a two-out solo homer to left.
Canisius added five runs in the seventh to lead 9-2 behind an RBI doubles from Mailloux and Kevin Mahoney (2-3, RBI), another RBI single from Wilson, while another run scored on a ground-ball double play and one run crossed the plate on an error. The Griffins added two more runs in the eighth to lead 11-2 after back-to-back solo homers by Perry Silverman (3-5, RBI) and Mailloux to open the inning. Longwood tried to rally with five runs in the eighth to close to within 11-7 but could get no closer. John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (3-1) took the pitching loss for Longwood with the first 6.0-plus innings on the mound, allowing 13 hits and six earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Shane Davis (2-2) earned the mound win for Canisius with the first 7.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs with two walks and six strikeouts.
