Longwood Falls In NorPac Semifinals To #15 Stanford 6-1

STANFORD, Calif. – The Longwood University field hockey team fell to 15th-ranked Stanford University 6-1 in the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference semifinals on Friday afternoon in Stanford, California. The Lancers' kept the match close in the first half, trailing 2-1 at halftime. Longwood returns to action on Saturday, November 7, against either California and Radford at 2 p.m. in Stanford in the consolation match.

Longwood (10-10) fell behind in the seventh minute after Midori Uehara scored the first goal of the match to give the Cardinal the early 1-0 lead. The Lancers answered in the 15th minute when junior Lauren van de Kamp/Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal) slid over to the side of the cage after and took a pass from sophomore Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) and redirected it in to the cage to tie the match at 1-1. Stanford (15-4) added another goal in the 29th minute to take a 2-1 lead in to halftime.

The Cardinal relied on Xanthe Travlos to get them going in the second half as she scored on a penalty stroke in the 44th minute and tacked on another goal in the 45th minute. Stanford would add two more goals to make the final score 6-1.

“We hung with them in the first half but it got away from us in the second half,” said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. “This was our best match against a ranked opponent this season, especially the first half. We learned we can play with anybody and tomorrow we have to take care of business against Cal or Radford.”

Six different players took shots for Longwood, with senior Julia Hernandez/Norfolk (Maury) attempting four of the shots. Senior Kelsey Turner/Virginia Beach (Tallwood) had two defensive saves and sophomore Rachel Akers/Virginia Beach (First Colonial)?had one.  Junior Erin Bollinger/Midlothian (Clover Hill) had five saves in goal for the Lancers.

Travlos led Stanford with two goals on six shots. Alessandra Moss stopped seven shots in the cage.

The Cardinal outshot Longwood 18-11 and had an 8-6 edge in penalty corners.
