FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University field hockey team defeated the University of the Pacific 3-1 in the first round of the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) Tournament on Thursday afternoon in Stanford, California. Three players scored for Longwood with junior
Lauren van de Kamp/Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal) scoring the eventual game-winning goal early in the first half.?The Lancers return to action on Friday, November 6, at 4:30 p.m. ET when they face host Stanford.
Senior
Julia Hernandez/Norfolk (Maury), the 2009 NorPac East Division Player of the Year, scored the first goal for Longwood 7:00 in to the match off a long pass from freshman
Christina Verhulst/Yorktown (Grafton). van de Kamp scored the eventual game-winner at the 13:33 mark on a pass from
Melissa Strickland/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) that she redirected in to the cage. Pacific would score two minutes later to make the score 2-1. Neither team would score the rest of the half.
Longwood (10-9) added an insurance goal in the 46th minute on a penalty corner where van de Kamp sent the ball to the top of the circle where
Kelsey Turner/Virginia Beach (Tallwood) set the ball up for
Kimberly Sullivan/Fredericksburg (Stafford) who completed the textbook penalty corner play. The Lancers' defense held firm and allowed only two shots in the second half as Longwood won 3-1.
“It was a good win and we accomplished one of our goals coming in,” said Longwood head coach
Iain Byers. “We played terrific defense in the second half and were aggressive throughout. We are guaranteed to play on Saturday, which was one of our goals for the week.”
Longwood outshot Pacific 12-6, including 6-2 in the second period. The Lancers' had a 9-2 edge in penalty corners.
van de Kamp scored one goal and added one assist. Sullivan and sophomore
Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) each had three shots on goal. Junior
Erin Bollinger/Midlothian (Clover Hill) collected five saves for Longwood.
Pacific (4-12) was led by Kim Keyawa who scored one goal on two shots. Ashlee Schlesier had seven saves in the cage for the Tigers.
