FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University field hockey team fell to third-ranked Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Junior Lauren van de Kamp/Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal) led Longwood with two shots, one on goal. The Lancers (5-7) return to action on Saturday, October 17, when they travel to Muncie, Indiana, to take on Central Michigan University in a neutral site match on the campus of Ball State University at 2 p.m..

The Lancers kept the game close in the first half, giving up the first goal to Traci Ragukas in the 16th minute. The Cavaliers (14-1) would strike again less than three minutes later to extend the lead to 2-0, a lead they would carry in to halftime.

The second half started much like the first, with Longwood withstanding a persistent UVa attack and mounting several counter-attacks. Virginia added a third goal in the 49th minute and another a minute later to pull ahead 4-0. Longwood had a chance to get on the board in the 60th minute when they found van de Kamp down by the post but her shot was stopped by the UVa goalkeeper. The Cavaliers would add three more goals in the final seven minutes to make the final 7-0.

“At times, when we worked as a team, we were competitive,” said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. “The third goal took the wind from our sails and we never recovered. We knew we were in for a tough ordeal and now we have to bounce back and take the positives on our trip to Indiana.”

Paige Selenski paced UVa with three goals and two assists. Inga Stockel added one goal and assisted on three others while Ragukas finished with a pair of goals.

Longwood was led by van de Kamp with two shots with one shot on goal. Sophomore Andrea Bastiaanse/Granby, Conn. (Granby Memorial) added a pair of shots. Junior goalkeeper Erin Bollinger/Midlothian (Clover Hill) had a career-high 10 saves for the Lancers.
