BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. - Hurricane Hanna did not keep the Longwood field hockey team (1-3) from picking up its first win of the season on a rain soaked saturday morning, as the team defeats Appalachian State 4-1. The Lancers were led by senior
Carla Binnewies/Hamburg, Germany (Carl von Ossietzkly Gymnasium) who ended the game with seven shots and an assist. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, September 7 as they face Vermont on 12:30 p.m. at the Athletics Complex.
“We are so excited to pick up a win,” said head coach
Iain Byers. “We played a great game, owning possession from the start. We were finally able to take advantage of our chances and it shows in the score and our shot count.”
Appalachian State (0-3) jumped on the board early, scoring in the sixth minute of action off an Amanda Young goal.
Carra Bunner/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) answered back two minutes later, tying the game 1-1, after slipping the ball past the Appalachian Keeper. The Lancers would go onto dominate the game offensively for the remainder of the half, out-shouting the Mountaineers 11-2.
Sophomore Lauren Van de Kamp/Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal) gave the Lancers a 2-1 advantage in the 12th minute after picking up the rebound of a Lancer penalty corner. The goal sent the two teams into the half with a one goal advantage.
“We were finally able to put together two good halves,” said Binnewies. “We came together as a team and took care of business.”
Van de Kamp started things off in the second half for the Lancers, setting up teammate
Kelsey Turner/Virginia Beach (Tallwood) on a penalty corner. Turner took two touches before firing the ball past the Mountaineer goalkeeper. The Lancer defense continued to be solid holding the Mountaineer to six shots, four of which were on goal.
The game was sealed in the 61st minute when freshman
Sarah Bietsch/Chambers, Pa. (Chambers Area) collected a pass from Binnewies, which found its way into the back of the net.
Senior
Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) earned the complete game making three saves. The Mountaineer goalkeeper Sabra Holt played all 70 minutes making five saves.
