BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey team (0-3) dropped its home opener to California (2-1) on Thursday evening, falling 4-1 at the Athletics Complex. Freshman forward Amanda Babineau/Stafford (Mountain View) scored the Lancers only goal of the match in the 25th minute. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, September 6 at 10 a.m. as they host Appalachian State at the Athletics Complex.

The Bears took an early 1-0 lead after Gwen Belomy fired a shot that bounced off the Lancer keeper. Belomy would put Cal up 2-0, after luring the keeper out of her box and slipping the ball past her. Longwood would earn one of the goals back moments later as senior Dani Basye/Lottsburg (Northumberland) help take the team back down field, finding Babineau who was able to score her second goal of the season by sending a driven shot into the net.

The teams headed into the locker room with California having a 3-1 lead after the Bears Carolina Bistue collected a rebound and sent it into the net. California would add one goal in the second half to seal the game 4-1.

"We played a much better first half than we did last weekend," said head coach Iain Byers. "We still are not where we want to be, but that will come with time. We are looking to take our continued improvement into the Appalachian State game."

Senior Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) played all 70 minutes for the Lancers collecting 11 saves.
