BOX SCORE
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Longwood University field hockey team (5-4, 3-1 NorPac) pulled out a hard fought victory on Sunday afternoon against NorPac foe Stanford (2-7, 1-2 NorPac) in Davidson, defeating the Cardinal's 2-1 in overtime. Senior
Carla Binnewies/Hamburg, Germany (Carl von Ossietzkly Gymnasium) gave the Lancers the victory four minutes into the first overtime period, slipping the ball under the keeper for second time in the game. Longwood comes home on Saturday, September 28 to host the 2007 NCAA Champions, North Carolina at 1 p.m., at the Athletics Complex.
Binnewies put the Lancers up 1-0 in the 18th minute of the game, after taking a shot from the right side. The shot found its way to net despite Binnewies having a tight angle. Stanford earned the goal back in the first four minutes of the second half, evening the game up 1-1.
Neither team would be able to slip one in during the winding minutes of regulation, sending the game to overtime. In the first golden goal overtime period, with both teams playing six versus six, the Lancers ended the match four minutes in. Junior Julia Hernadez/Norfolk (Maury) set up the play, dishing the ball to Binnewies on the left side, allowing the senior midfielder to dribble into the box and shoot the ball under the Stanford keeper.
“We are so excited,” said head coach
Iain Byers. “Stanford is a very good team and a tough conference opponent. We are very excited to continue our win streak, especially over a team that challenges us to be better. Our girls continue to play with loads of heart and determination, making every victory absolutely amazing.”
