LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Longwood University field hockey team dropped its season opener against Lock Haven 5-1 on Saturday afternoon in Lewisburg, Pa. The Lancers (0-1) lone goal came from freshman
Amanda Babineau/Stafford (Mountain View) in the second half of action. Longwood returns to the field on Sunday, August 31 taking on Bucknell, with the game scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
The Lancers struggled to find a rhythm in the first half of action, falling behind 4-0 heading into halftime. Lock Haven would go on to add another goal in the 52nd minute before the Lancers were able to counter.
“The team played hard,” said head coach
Iain Byers. “We were unable to take care of our chances, but overall I?believe it was a good learning experience for a lot of our younger players. This game helps us evaluate where we are as a program and figure out what we need to work on.”
Junior
Julia Hernandez/Norfolk (Maury) collected her first assist of the season in the 70th minute after dishing the ball to Babineau, who was able to sink the ball in the back of the net.
Longwood ended the day with eight shots to Lock Havens 14. The Eagles also put 10 shots on goal, compared to the Lancers four. Longwood edged out Lock Haven in corners, 6-3, but were unable to capitalize.
Senior
Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) recorded the complete game, making four saves on the day.
