BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University field hockey team dropped its second round game to the top-seeded California Golden Bears on Friday afternoon, falling 5-1. The Lancers are now set to take on #3 Pacific in the third place game set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 8.  California will now take on #2 Stanford for the championship in a replay of last seasons title game.

The Lancers had two quick looks at the start of the game, but were unable to get off quality shots. California on the other hand buried two of their opening opportunities to take a 2-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game. Both California goals came from Ashley Glosz.

California would add two more goals early in the second half to take 4-0 advantage, with Katie Knoche being involved in both conversions. Knoche scored the Golden Bears third goal of the game while assisting in the fourth.

Three minutes later California took a 5-0 lead (53:15) with Glosz scoring her third goal of the game for the hat-trick. Longwood would earn one back in the 64th minute with a goal from sophomore Andrea Bastiannse/Granby, Conn. (Granby Memorial). Bastiannse's first goal of the season and first of her career came from a play after a corner that she fired straight down the center of the shooting circle. Freshman Amanda Babineau/Stafford (Mountain View) earned the assist.

“We are obviously upset,” head coach Iain Byers said. “We wanted to make it to the championship game for our fans, the university and ourselves, but we still have a chance to win third place. We are going to put this game behind us and focus on our game tomorrow.”

Despite the goal being so lopsided, the shots were much closer with California having a 13-9 advantage, while Longwood had seven corners to California's four.

Senior goalkeeper Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) ended the game with four saves, while the California keeper had three.
